FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
April 24, 2008

University of Illinois Extension presents Horse Pasture 101 Program

Horse pastures are a major concern for horse owners. They ask:

  • How should the ground be prepared – tilled and fertilized?
  • What varieties of grass species are ideal for pasture, and in what ratios?
  • When should the grass varieties be planted?
  • How do I manage grazing in the pastures?
  • How is quality of hay for sale evaluated?

These and other topics will be the subject matter for the Horse Pasture 101 program for horse owners, offered in two sessions. The venue will be at Camp Shaw, 6641 N 6000W Road

Manteno, IL 60950, a wonderful outdoor setting near Kankakee State Park. The camp just recently acquired horses, and plans are underway to establish a horse pasture. The camp offers a great opportunity for learning pasture basics, which will be observed by participants.

Sessions will be from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Wednesday, May 14: Establishing a pasture, land measurement & preparation and choosing pasture grasses and planting.

Thursday, August 28: Pasture and hay, progress of the Camp Shaw pasture, which grass species performed well, weed control and understanding hay quality.

It is highly recommended that you attend both sessions. The fee is $15 per session per person. Pre-registration is required, no walk-ins allowed. For more information please call Kankakee County Extension Office at 815-933-8337. You must be 16 years old to attend. University of Illinois Extension provides equal opportunities in programs and employment.
