Barn Quilts of Kankakee County is an exciting new project created to celebrate and honor the rural heritage of our county. Local farm buildings in Kankakee County will showcase painted quilt block patterns...marketed to promote agricultural heritage, the arts, agritourism and volunteerism.
Criteria for Barn Quilts:
• Barn/farm building must be at least 50 years old and structurally sound on a well-maintained farm
• Barn should be visible from a paved road with a safe pull-off area for viewing and photography
The quilt block will be painted on eight foot by eight foot construction material that will then be hung for viewing on the barn or building. A number of traditional quilt block patterns are available that lend themselves well for this creative project. Applications for site consideration are available from participating groups or from University of Illinois Extension, Kankakee County. Applications for the 2008 crop of barns are due by May 15, 2008.
We are seeking individuals, families, churches, organizations or businesses to donate time, talents and/or financial support.
• Barn sponsorship is estimated to cost $250.
• Financial donations of all amounts are needed to cover the costs of materials and paint.
• Volunteers are needed to paint and complete the quilt displays.
Partnering groups include: University of Illinois Extension, Kankakee County; Kankakee County Convention and Visitors Bureau; Community Arts Council, Inc. of Kankakee County; Kankakee Quiltmakers; and other area organizations.
