"Who Lives Here?" Outdoor Education Series
"Let's take a look here."
"Who Lives Here?" was the question asked and answered at Camp Shaw-waw-nas-see on Monday, October 9. Students, ages 9 – 13, joined University of Illinois Extension staff and volunteers in a special outdoor program investigating the wildlife at the camp. While hiking through the camp, the youth discovered evidence of wildlife. They then took GPS readings and digital photos of the locations. This will allow for finding the locations during the next two outdoor programs this winter and spring. Insects were collected and the butterfly garden and the creek were of great interest to all.
Monday, January 15, 2007 and Friday, April 6, 2007 youth will have the opportunity to explore those sites and more as we have winter and spring outdoor education programs. The January topics will include geology, winter tree identification, and adaptations made by animals and plants to their environment. The April program will feature bird identification, emerging plants, and man's influence on animal habitat and the food chain. A summer session is planned to explore the water resources of the camp and surrounding area.
New participants ages 9 – 13 are welcome at each session. The cost for each session is $5, which includes the camp fee, materials and a small snack. Registration is required at least one week in advance by filling out the registration form on our website: kankakee.extension.uiuc.edu and mailing the $5 fee to: University of Illinois Extension, Kankakee County, 1650 Commerce Drive, Bourbonnais, IL 60914. If you have additional questions, call Donna Nuger at (815) 933-8337.
Depending on whether you are a child or an adult, a day off from school brings certain expectations. Children just want to have fun but adults think a day off should be a learning day. University of Illinois Extension 4-H program believes both groups are correct. Children ages 10 – 13 will have fun and learn with our science programs offered at the Kankakee Community Resource Center, 150 N. Indiana Avenue, Kankakee. Fun science activities in physical science are the name of the game during upcoming winter and spring breaks. A nominal fee of $3 per person, per class is being charged to cover the cost of supplies. Classes begin at 10:30 a.m. and end at 1:00 p.m. Mark the following dates on your calendar. Sign-up using the form available on our website at: kankakee.extension.uiuc.edu and mail it to University of Illinois Extension, Kankakee County, 1650 Commerce Drive, Bourbonnais, IL 60914. It must arrive at least one week before each program. Maximum and minimum number of participants apply to all programs. No walk-ins please.

The second annual "Food, Fun and Friends" 4-H kick-off was held on Sunday, October 1 at the Kankakee County Extension office. Participants enjoyed hot dogs, chips, homemade cookies and lemonade. The weather could not have been better as everyone did crafts, played games with the parachute, learned about dairy science, and made new friends. The obedience and agility demonstration by a beagle named Goofy was a highlight for the dog lovers who decided to join the 4-H Dog Project. The great variety of projects available to youth was highlighted.
