Consumer, Family and Nutrition Education

Dining with Diabetes, a four-part series for individuals with diabetes or those that cook for them was presented by Extension educators to 10 individuals at Hickory Hills Senior Housing in Hopkins Park.

Ten Tasty Tuesdays for Healthy Eating was instituted providing over 30 individuals each month with topical information, recipes and samples.

Ten hours of continuing education instruction was provided by by the U of I telenet system for 10 nutrition professionals.

Five individuals completed 20 hours of classroom instruction and testing and are now Master Food Preservers available to answer questions and provide programs on canning, freezing and preserving foods.

More than 8,900 low resource individuals attended programs about nutrition, food budgeting, and food safety in local community schools, food pantries and senior housing facilities. A total of 7,600 newsletters and fact sheets about nutrition for children, adults and seniors were distributed monthly. This program is specifically for individuals eligible for food stamps.

This year 181 child care providers attended the 23rd Annual Child Care Conference and participated in workshops to improve their knowledge in their field. Five hours of continuing education was provided.

Kankakee County Extension participated in and provided technical support to the recently formed organization, Reducing Overweight Children of Kankakee County (ROCK). The organization works to increase encourage children and others to “move more and eat less.”
