4-H Clothing Workshops

Clothing workshops will be held on June 4, 11, 18, 25 and 26 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Extension Office. The cost is $5 per person. This is not a required activity for clothing projects, but it should be very helpful.

First year members will make pajama pants. Patterns will be purchased through McCall's pattern company. Cost is $1.50. All other members may also order patterns at $1.50. Call 815/933-8337 for more information and to register for the workshop.

Those attending will need to bring the following items to the first session: fabric (pre-laundered), pattern, pins, sewing scissors, tape measure, seam ripper, matching thread, and your project manual. Please be sure that you have read the 4-H Project Manuals prior to the first day of the workshop.

Exhibit Requirements

All 2008 4-H Judging requirements are found in your 2008 Kankakee County 4-H Fairbook. It is up to each 4-H member to attend their 4-H club meeting to receive a fairbook and a Fair Registration Form.

4-H'ers unable to attend a scheduled judging event may send their project with someone else. The project must be accompanied by a Fair Exhibit Form. The 4-H'er may get this form from their leader, the county Extension Office, or off the county website.

State Fair Delegates & Alternates

4-H'ers, parents and main club leaders need to check the 4-H Club Display at the Mall on Saturday, July 26 or Sunday, July 27 to see who has been chosen as a delegate or alternate. Look for an information packet with sign-up postcard by the State Fair project. Return the completed card by Tuesday, July 29 to the 4-H Forum Office at the fairgrounds. Cards must be returned even if the 4-H'er is not attending. If cards are not returned by July 29, Extension Staff will assume the 4-H'er is not going to State Fair and the slot will be filled by an alternate.

Food Skill-A-Thon Helpers Needed

Helpers are needed for Foods Judging Activity, Tuesday, July 8. 4-H'ers may go to several Food Skill-A-Thon stations and show how much they have learned from their food project manual. Older 4-H'ers may assist with this activity.

Bicycle Rodeo

Members enrolled in 4-H Bicycle projects are judged at the 4-H Bicycle Rodeo. This will be held on Saturday, July 19 at 9:00 a.m. at the Extension Office. The 4-H Bicycle Rodeo consists of a safety check, written test, and driving skills test. Page 59 of the 4-H Fairbook has additional details. Bring your bicycle. Helmets are required.

Project Area Coordinators Needed

Volunteers are needed to assist as Project Area Coordinators at 4-H General Project Judging Day.

Duties are:

  • Assist Judge and Judge's Recorders.
  • Assist with State Fair consideration and winner selection documentation.

Project areas where coordinators are needed:

  • Visual Arts
  • Mechanics, Engineering & Technology
  • Natural Resources & Environment

Please contact the Extension Office if you can volunteer.

Awesome Achiever Award

The Awesome Achiever Award began five years ago as a way to recognize 4-H'ers who were too young to be chosen as a State Fair Delegate or Alternate but had done an outstanding job on their 4-H exhibit. The first year there were 2 project areas. The second year there were 4 project areas. This year there will be 6 project areas: Woodworking, Aerospace, Computer, Photography, Child Development and Electricity.
