Eating right and keeping healthy are important issues for us all.

Extension offers programs that address:

  • food buying,
  • diet and disease nutrition,
  • rest, exercise and diet,
  • stress reduction,
  • functional foods,
  • food management, and
  • food safety.

The Family Nutrition Program is a special program that provides information about basic nutrition, food budgeting, and food safety to food stamp eligible recipients.

We have included some of the other programs that Extension can present for groups of 15 or more people. Call us at (630) 584-6166 if you would like more information about them.

  • Healthy Cooking with Herbs

Many people are interested in reducing the fat, sugar and salt in the foods they eat. Often when these ingredients are reduced, so is the flavor. By learning to use herbs and spices for seasoning, the diet can be both healthy and tasty. This program will give suggestions on how to successfully use herbs in seasoning food.

Time: 60 minutes

Audience: Adults

  • Understanding Fat in the Diet

Fat is an important nutrient in the diet. Many people are interested in reducing the amount of fat in the diet. Unfortunately,information about fat is often confusing. Also, trans fatty acids have been in the news recently and will soon be included in the nutrition facts labeling. This program will help make sense of all the confusing information. It will discuss the types of fat, what foods are high in fat and give suggestions for reducing fat in the diet.

Time: 60-90 minutes

Audience: Adults

  • Diabetes Awareness

Diabetes affects approximately 11 million Americans. Thousands more are at risk for developing diabetes. This risk can be reduced by developing a healthy lifestyle and eating healthy. This program will discuss the symptoms and risk factors of diabetes. It will also include suggestions for developing an exercise program and a healthy eating plan.

Time: 90 minutes

Audience: Adults

  • Dining with Diabetes

Most diabetics are told what they cannot eat, instead of how to balance food, exercise and medication to cope with their illness. This is a three-part cooking school for individuals with diabetes and interested family members.

Time: Each lesson is 21/2 to 3 hours long, and should be scheduled once a week for 3 weeks.

Audience: Diabetics and interested family members - Limited to 25 participants per series.
