Third Annual "A Walk in the Garden" July 28, 29, and 30
Fun, food, presentations, demonstrations, entertainment, plant sales, farmer's market are all included with the 2006 version of "A Walk in the Garden" which features 12+ gardens and points of interest.
The gardening extravaganza will be headquartered in the tent at the parking lot south of Savanna City Hall, at the intersection of Main St. and Chicago Ave. All but one of the presentations will be made there or in the Savanna City Council Chambers.
The event kicks off at 3 p.m. on Friday, July 28 with a Farmer's Market followed by two presentations, the first, at 4 p.m. is a Garden Produce Food Demonstration followed at 5 p.m. by a presentation on "Unusual Perennials."
Also at 5 p.m. until 7 p.m., Savanna Mayor and Chef Bill Lease will be serving a spaghetti supper with proceeds going to the Savanna Vision Network and from 7 until 8 p.m., Rivertown Theater Project will have two productions involving youngsters, a Reader's Theatre and a puppeteer group.
The gardens and points of interest will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 29 and Sunday, July 30. Admission to the gardens is free but donations are greatly appreciated.
This year's event features a dozen plus gardens and points of interest in a wide variety of settings from the sand prairies of the Thomson area to the bluffs east of Savanna, the gently rolling hills south of Mount Carroll and everything in between. The tour is designed to show you the diversity of gardening in Carroll County and the creative ingenuity of its residents.
Rose gardens, cottage gardens, vegetable gardens, pool gardens, traditional and non-traditional gardens, are included as well as a self-guided walking tour of a campus filled with native American trees which boasts the oldest American Chestnut tree in Illinois. And, as is the best part of a garden tour, you'll be able to talk to the creators of the gardens you visit
and learn from their experiences both good and bad. Signs will be posted along the route.
Packets including descriptions of the gardens and points of interest as well as maps and directions will be available at the registration desk at the City Hall parking lot tent where the following will also take place:

This is the third of four seasonal offerings for gardeners. Tree & Shrub Insect Pests, Perennials for Special Uses and Incredible Edible Flowers will be presented. Each program will be offered twice for your convenience
Tree & Shrub Insect Pests will help you identify what is bugging your trees and shrubs. Fine webbing on the foliage? Notches eaten out of the leaves? Holes in the trunk? Jim Shuster,
Horticulture Educator, will get you up close and personal with several common insect pests. This program will be held on Tuesday, July 18 at 1 p.m. and on Thursday, July 20 at 7 p.m.
Perennials for Special Uses will focus your attention to what else the plant has to offer beyond good looks. Want to attract butterflies or hummingbirds? Have a lot of shade in your garden? Are deer eating you out of house and home? Not everyperennial suits every garden. Join Sharon Yiesla, Horticulture Educator, for a new way to look at some of our perennial favorites. Knowing the uses of perennials can help each gardener select the right plants. This program will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 1 at 1 p.m. and on Thursday, Aug. 3 at 7 p.m.
Incredible Edible Flowers will introduce you to a different menu choice. Have you ever looked at your garden flowers and thought, "These look good enough to eat?" This isn't just a daydream. Edible flowers add color, taste and fragrance to even the most common of foods. From appetizers to desserts, edible flowers add a unique quality to meals that will make everyone think you are quite a chef. Let Sandy Mason, Horticulture Educator, show you which flowers are edible, which ones to leave in the garden and even a few recipes to get you started in the incredible edible world of flowers. The program will be on Tuesday, Aug. 15 at 1 p.m. and repeated Thursday, Aug. 17 at 7 p.m.
There is a $3. charge for each session. All three programs will be held at both extension offices using the University of Illinois Extension telenet system and local computer PowerPoint presentations, allowing live discussion between the instructor and gardeners throughout Illinois. Advance registration is requested. To register call the Carroll County office at 815-244-9444 or Jo Daviess County at 815-858-2273
