To help landowners understand rural property owner rights and responsibilities as well as to learn about landowner program opportunities, the Northwestern Illinois Land and Farm Preservation Coalition has put together "The Three "R's" of Rural Living" seminar series with the first session "Rights, Rules, & Responsibilities" set for February 25 at the Community Building, Elizabeth, IL. The second session "Bought Some Acreage Now What?" will be held on March 31 at the Holy Cross Church, Stockton , IL. Check-in for each session begins at 8:30 a.m. with both programs running from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Each program utilizes several guest speakers from a number of area organizations. Topics covered at the February 25 session include typical property easements, well and septic issues, zoning, land use, understanding property assessment, forestry and conservation development acts, legal disposal of unwanted items and local recycling opportunities. March 31st topics include knowing your property features and soils, leasing options for cropland, pastures, and buildings, government programs, legal primer on key landowner laws, landowner liability and risk management, and land improvement options.
Registration fee is $25 per session or $40 for both sessions with a discount available for additional family members if registered one week in advance. GRAZING WORKSHOP MARCH 11-FREEPORT
Getting The Most From Your Grazing Acres. This workshop is designed to help those who have experience managing pastures for maximum livestock production as well as those just starting a grazing operation in northwestern Illinois. We will discuss management of your toughest weed problems, pasture grass species selection and the basics of animal nutrition of livestock on pasture. The workshop will be held March 11th at the Stephenson County Farm Bureau Building in Freeport. Please send reservations to the Stephenson Extension office by March 5th. There will be an on-farm follow up session tentatively set for July 9th. Join us at this morning program – you'll gain ideas to use in your operation, plus visit with fellow graziers.

PREMISE ID NUMBER REQUIRED TO EXHIBIT
On October 31st of last year, the Illinois Department of Agriculture announced that a Premise Identification number would be required to exhibit livestock at all state, county, 4-H, and FFA fairs beginning in 2008. What species need a Premise ID? Cattle, swine, sheep, chickens, ducks, geese, rabbits, llamas/alpacas, horses, mules, deer/elk, turkeys, pheasants, quail, guineas, ratites (ostriches/emus), and goats. What does this mean to our livestock exhibitors and fairs? Come and find out. There will be two informational meetings held in February. Jim Kunkel from the Illinois Dept. of Ag will speak on Feb 13 at the Elizabeth Community Building from 7-9 p.m and Feb 20 at the Carroll County Farm Bureau Building from 6-8 p.m.

GROWING OF THE GREEN HORT WORKSHOP MARCH 15
The Jo Daviess Carroll Area Vocation Center (AVC) and University of Illinois Extension Master Gardeners of Jo Daviess County have teamed up to host the "Growing of the Green" family day of horticulture fun workshop set for Saturday, March 15 from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the AVC building, Elizabeth, IL. The event includes numerous horticulture topic sessions including youth activities to select from and attend.
TAKE 5 FOR THE ENVIRONMENT-ELIZABETH
We are pleased to bring you the popular discussion and lecture series, "Take 5 for the Environment" for 2008. This year, the sessions include a variety of speakers with an array of topics that will keep you up-to-date and informed about local environmental issues and conservation practices.
The talks are FREE and open to the public. Complimentary refreshments will be provided. Pre-registration is encouraged one week in advance to ensure availability of handouts. EXOTIC INVASIVE PLANT & INSECT WORKSHOP FEB 22-FREEPORT
Exotic Invasive Plants and Insects are an environmental issue of concern. Having the skills to identify and manage these species are important skills for you to have. This 5 hour workshop will provide identification and management information to control a variety of plant and insect pests. Presented by Specialists and Educators from the University of Illinois Extension, the workshop will cover:
· The importance of controlling these species
· Laws and Regulations involved
· Identification and Management of Exotic Invasive Plants and Insects
The workshop is open to landowners, highway department personnel, township individuals, public works departments, property managers, and anyone else interested in helping learn how to manage these problems. Local government officials will have the opportunity to gain valuable information about important issues without leaving the county with this years telenet series. Presenters for the programs include representatives of state agencies, Extension staff, and community leaders with experience in the issues and challenges faced by local officials. The Tele-Institute programs also provide the opportunity for county officials to earn Certified County Official credit. Each Tele-Institute qualifies for 2 hours of CCO credit. Registration should be completed no later than one week prior to each program. Those interested in participating should call 815-244-9444 to attend in Mt. ALFALFA TELECONFERENCE FEB 29-ELIZABETH
Production and harvest strategies will highlight the Alfalfa Production and Harvesting Workshop hosted by University of Illinois Extension on February 29. The program is from 9:30 am to 12 Noon and will be presented via distance delivery at the Jo Daviess County Extension Office in Elizabeth, IL. Registration begins at 9 am.
"Alfalfa growers, dealers and consultants will hear about current production, harvest, and protection strategies that impact the profitability of alfalfa operations," reports Jim Morrison, Extension Educator, crop systems. "Information will be presented to help fine-tune management plans for the 2008 crop".
Kevin Shinners, University of Wisconsin-Madison agricultural engineer, will discuss "Ways to Speed Hay Dry Down". "Roundup Ready Alfalfa – What's the Current Situation?" will be presented by Aaron Hager, University of Illinois Extension weed specialist.
Carl Bradley, Extension pathologist at the University of Illinois, will discuss "Managing Alfalfa Diseases – Where to Start?" and Jim Morrison Extension Educator, crop systems will provide an "Update on Nitrogen Credit from Alfalfa". Paul Peterson, Extension forage specialist, University of Minnesota, will round out the program by addressing "How Hardy is Alfalfa? – Lessons Learned from the '07 Easter Freeze".
Continuing education units in IPM and Crop Management for Certified Crop Advisers have been requested. The program is sponsored by University of Illinois Extension. The cost is $10.00 per person if registered by Feb. 22, or $15.00 per person after then. CERTIFIED LIVESTOCK TRAINING FEB 26– MT. CARROLL
A Certified Livestock Manager training workshop will be held on Tuesday, February 26, at Naaman Diehl Auditorium, Mt. Carroll. This workshop is primarily aimed at swine producers with examples and discussion, but is open to ALL producers. Registration will start at 8:15 a.m. and the workshop itself will begin at 8:50 a.m. Participants arriving after 9:20 a.m. cannot be certified for attending the workshop.
