Rocks to Ice Cream

Do your students know that ice cream comes from rocks? This program involves the whole class in a demonstration showing the relationship between our soil and our food. Both plant and animal foods have their roots (yes, pun was intended) in our soil. In fact, much of what we eat, wear, or use to build our homes wouldn't be possible without soil.

With all that talk about ice cream, we just have to eat some! The program concludes with the students working in pairs to make ice cream in a bag. Homemade ice cream can be made quickly and deliciously by using zip lock bags, milk, and ice. While we are eating, we talk about what part of the Food Pyramid ice cream represents.

Materials Provided: Extension Youth Development Educator will present this program in your classroom. If younger classes are large, an extra adult helper speeds distribution of ingredients.
