There is growing recognition that character development is a fundamental need for children. Lessons of character are delivered to this young audience via animal stories and activities. The stories and corresponding activities help children understand character issues, and help them see how they can practice good character. Parent letters and take home worksheets foster parent involvement, as their role in character development is crucial. The program gives ideas for parent meetings and follow-up evaluations. Character Critters uses the six pillars of character emphasized in CHARACTER COUNTS! from the Josephson Institute of Ethics. Those traits are:
- Responsibility
- Trustworthiness
- Respect
- Caring
- Fairness
- Citizenship
Teaching about and training young people to exhibit character is an investment in tomorrow. A free, democratic society needs its citizens to practice ethical behavior. The basic elements of character are believed to be relevant for all individuals, regardless of race, creed, ethnic group, gender, politics, or wealth.
