Holy Cow! It is June already and fair will be right around the corner!
Therefore, each of you need to be working and getting serious about your 4-H projects! If you should have any questions or need help with a project and their requirements, please call or stop by the Extension Office anytime. Be sure to look over the Fair Handbook to know the specific requirements for each project. Please don't wait until the day before the fair to have a question or need help, being organized is a key component to a great 4-H project. June is "Dairy Month", so if you or your club would like to promote Dairy, please call the office for more details!
Don't forget that your 4-H Records is a part of your exhibition requirement for the fair. You will also be required to have a project form filled out for each project. If you are working on your project manuals, those forms should be easy to complete. The seven activities may come from those that are completed in the manuals. Those that have livestock, you have to do livestock records. All of these forms needs to be completed when you check in your project/livestock at the fair.
The 4-H BBQ is quickly approaching. I hope everyone is out there selling tickets. It is my goal to sell more tickets than we have in the past and make this the biggest BBQ we have had in recent years!! Don't forget that the money from this event will go to help you the 4-H'er attend camps, receive scholarships and have workshops available to you!!!! Therefore, what you do and how many tickets you sell makes a difference in the end!
The sun is FINALLY shinning and it is gradually getting warmer. Get out and enjoy your summer!
HAPPY FATHER'S DAY!!!
Sincerely,
Ryan Staley Program Coordinator 4-H/Youth & Family rstaley@uiuc.edu

Cumberland County 4-H Federation Meeting
May 2008 Secretary's Notes
The meeting was called to order by the Federation President Paige Hatfill. The American Pledge was led by Jaylynn Maxey and the 4-H Pledge was led by Presley Hatfill. The Secretary's report was read by Michelle Niebrugge and it was approved by Kara Swingler and seconded by Melissa Koester. The Treasurers report was given by Houston Moses and was approved by Jason Koester and seconded by Kara Swingler. At this time Old Business was discussed. These were topics such as U of I Illini Summer Academies, 4-H Memorial Camp, Livestock Camp Part 2, and the 4-H BBQ. After discussion, Old Business was closed. New Business was opened with the Extension Budget, Federation outing and the Toledo Spring Festival being on the agenda. It was voted to have a float during the Spring Festival. The theme is "Surf's Up" and great ideas were talked about. It was decided to use an "American Surf" theme and some Federation Members volunteered their time and supplies for the float. A donation to the fairgrounds was also discussed to help fund the repainting of a sign next to the stage area. New business was closed. The next meeting is set for June 12, 2008 at the Extension Office. Please come if you are interested!
I want to keep each and every one of you updated on the concerns of the funding for the University of Illinois Extension.
The J/C Unit staff would like to thank those who contacted local legislators and even the Governors office to lend support to the Extension Programs offered throughout the state. That input did & does make a difference to those managing the budgets and appropriating funds.
The Fiscal Year '08 funds have been released and are in the bank. That takes care of last year's money, now it is time to think about the 2009 budget. There remains uncertainty regarding the percentage of match to be paid for fiscal year '09. That is why we need to continue the quest of promoting the 4-H and Extension Programming that our youth participate in.
What we do know: Cumberland County has enough funds to operate until the end of June 2009 without any major changes. Fair will continue as scheduled without any major funding concerns.
With GREAT 4-H Families and GREAT Volunteers our jobs are easier and much more rewarding!
Don, Cindy and I would like to take this opportunity to THANK everyone for contacting local legislators and the governors office to help restore the funds for FY 08. I hope that you continue to keep the Extension Programming at the top of your list to support!
We only have a couple weeks until the 4-H BBQ! Now is the time to really be selling those advance tickets. With everyone's help and cooperation we can make our fundraiser a success. How here are a few tips on what you can do to help:
- Sell advance tickets!
- Post 4-H BBQ signs and flyers!
- Advertise by word of mouth!
- Sign up to work at the BBQ and show up to work!
- Have your parents volunteer to work!
- Bake desserts for the BBQ! (cookies, brownies, cakes, pies, etc.)
**Sell MORE TICKETS! There is a lot of work and cooperation that goes into this event. That is why we need your help to make it happen. Those that can volunteer and who are able to help your services are greatly appreciated! I'm sure it will be a hectic day, but with advanced planning we will have a GREAT BBQ!

It was another good year for the 4-H Pies stand that was held during the Toledo Fire Department's Chicken Dinner during the Toledo Spring Festival. It was held Sunday May 18th with several patrons of the community attending. A special thanks is extended to Vivian Hallet, Jennifer Staley and Vickie Staley for their help in making this year's event a success! Also, thank you to everyone for taking the time to donate and make the pies for the stand, we couldn't do it without you! We raised a little over $300.00 profit, which will be used to offset the cost of publications. We did have a few left over, so we will be using them for the 4-H BBQ. Again, THANK YOU!!
