Horse Ownership/Lease Papers
4-H'ers in the Horse & Pony project who plan to show at the 4-H Equine Challenge Show, or Illinois Jr. Horse show must have ownership/lease papers on file at the Extension office by May 1. The 4-H county horse show ownership papers must have all the above paperwork in the office by June 1st
Please include two photos, one for each side of every horse/pony you may ride in the shows.

4-H member enrollments are due in the Extension Office by the 4-H Leaders no later than June 1, 2007; for members who plan to exhibit at the Cumberland County 4-H shows this summer. Members may be added or dropped from membership at any time, but after June 1, 2007, they are not eligible to show at this year's shows.
All youth must be 8 years of age or in third grade by September 1st of 2006 in order to enroll or exhibit.
Cloverbud members are not eligible for premium but may display their project at any of the 4-H shows.

Cumberland County 4-Her's sold pie to the patrons of the Toledo Fire Department's Chicken Dinner during Toledo Spring Festival on Sunday, May 20 Special thanks to all the volunteers that made this year's event a success. Without the excellent pies from area bakers and the time volunteered, we could not do this. All your time and effort is appreciated. The pie stand raised $300.00 profit, which will be used to offset the cost of 4-H publications

WANTED: Cancelled/Used Postage
The Jackson Co. 4-H Program is partnering with a local girl scout troop to collect cancelled postage stamps. These stamps are then sold to collectors outside the U.S. and the funds raised are used to purchase school uniforms, school supplies, and textbooks for needy children in India.
Metered mail stamps won't work, but any and all regular cancelled postage stamps your office or 4-H clubs/families could save and send to Jackson Co. would be MUCH appreciated. This is an on-going project, so there are no deadlines to note.

Illinois Farm Bureau Youth Education Committee
Two 4-H representatives are needed for August 1, 2007 through July 31, 2008 terms. The application is due by Friday, June 15. Commitment information is on first page of application. Application will be available via the 4-H website (Information for Field Staff/Teen Opportunities) shortly
Illinois State 4-H Youth Leadership Team
There will be several spots opening on this team, starting September 1. Terms are 2 years. Applicants must be 16-19 years of age as of 9/1/2007 (can serve until they are 21).
Information on commitment and regional openings are on the application form. Application is available at the Extension office or it is also available on the 4-H website (Special Opportunities/Volunteerism/State 4-H Youth Leadership Team).
Applications are due by June 14 for interviews at ILC or August 1 for interviews during State Fair.
4-H Veterinary Science Award Application
4-H VeterinaryScience Award program, sponsored by the Auxiliary to the Illinois State Veterinary Medical Association. Applicants must be between the ages of 15 and 18 (inclusive) by September 1, 2006 and must have been enrolled in the Vet Science project at least 3 years (including the current year). Applications must by postmarked no later than July 2, 2007.
The State Winner will receive a $100 cash award. The Auxiliary to ISVMA will contact the winner and make arrangements for presentation of the award this fall.

4-H JUDGING POLICY
4-H members, who are unable to show their project(s) this summer during the Miscellaneous and/or Foods Show due to work, death, or illness in family, school related activity or vacation should send the completed project with another member accompanied by a written summary of the exhibit. Projects not accompanied by a 4-H member and other required materials are listed as listed below will receive one grade lower. This is a county rule; see page 60, in newly revised 4-H Handbook.
RULE: Any 4-H member may receive and "A" rating if not attending in person* at the Cumberland County 4-H Miscellaneous Show and/or Foods show and be eligible for State Judging, (if of age) for the following reasons:
*If absence is due to work, death, or illness in family, school related activity or vacation.
Criteria for project when not present: Project Goal Sheet for appropriate age.
Essay required: Age 8–11–Minimum of one hand written page Age 12–14–minimum of one typed page Age 15–18–minimum of two typed pages
Must complete all project requirements
Leader must be contacted 48 hours in advance for reason of not attending and approve reason. Leader must contact Extension Office to inform of absence
Grade levels will automatically be lowered on letter is exhibit requirements are not followed.
Please consult the 4-H handbook for further information on Judging policy. If you are uncertain about a project requirement, don't hesitate to call you leader or the Extension Office.
For every project that you do you need to fill out the Cumberland County 4-H Project GRAY form. This form should accompany your project when you are at any of the shows.
If you have livestock you still have to fill out the form BUT you do not have to fill out the back.
There is one form in this newsletter, if you need more please contact your leader or the office.
Do not leave these until the last minute. You can not show until your records are completed.

It's that time, once again, to start counting down to the 4-H BBQ. Now is the time to start selling those advance tickets. With everyone's help and cooperation we can make our fundraiser a success. Now here are a few tips on what you can do to help.
- Sell advance tickets!
- Post 4-H BBQ signs and flyers!
- Advertise by word of mouth
- Sign up to work at the 4-H BBQ and
- Show up to work your shift.
- Have your parents volunteer to work
- Bake desserts for the 4-H BBQ (cookies, brownies, cakes, pies, etc)
- SELL MORE TICKETS! To ensure a successful BBQ we need help, help, help! Anything volunteers are able to do will be greatly appreciated. Please be sure to sign the work schedule your leader has. This will be a very hectic day, but with advanced planning we will have a GREAT 4-H BBQ!

Patrons of the BBQ are looking forward to home baked cookies, pies, cakes, etc. Don't let them down. Bring your dessert allotment to the BBQ and take pride in your efforts as they enjoy their meal, right down to the dessert.
Leaders must turn in all ticket sale money to the Extension Office by Thursday, June 14, to be eligible for the ticket sales contest. 4-H members are to return their tickets and money back to their club leaders only. Do not return to the Extension Office.
Don't forget to sell your tickets and volunteer your time and energy so that 2007 is a great year for the 4-H BBQ.
Come join in on the work, camaraderie, and fun that will be enjoyed.
The 4-H Equine Challenge is Saturday, June 9 at the Rock-N-A Ranch, Charleston. 4-H'ers from our region can compete on teams in halter, Western and English classes at the Rock-N-A Ranch. Teams consist of four 4-H members or horse/rider combo. Awesome prizes such as bridle bags, hat cans, saddle carriers, hay bags, engraved buckles or jackets are awarded to each member of winning teams. Fees: $15 per rider or rider/horse combo and $5.00 grounds fee per horse.For more information please contact the Extension Office.

The IL Suffolk Sheep Association will give away a ewe lamb donated by Ireton Suffolks of Clare, IL to the winner of an essay contest. Applicants ages 8 -21 living in Illinois may write a brief essay for the contest, stating why they want a Suffolk ewe lamb and what they plan to do with their sheep project. They must include a cover sheet with their name, contact information, age, parents' names, interests and activities, and any sheep experience. Sheep experience is NOT required. Applicants must be mailed by June 1, 2007. The winner will be announced at the IL Suffolk Preview Show on June 9, 2007 in Eureka, IL. Applicant must be present there to win.

State Fair Premium Books - State fair premium books and livestock entry forms are now available via the State Fair web site. www.illinoisstatefair.info
Quality Assurance and Ethics Certification - The newly updated and revised Quality Assurance and Ethics Certification website is up for this year. 4-H and FFA youth can go to http://qaec.extension.uiuc.edu and go through their training. When they log-in and complete the training, your county Extension office will receive notification.
