4-H Memorial Camp

June 10-14 – Full week and June 5 -7 – 4-H Mini Camp

You do not have to be in 4-H to attend this camp, so ask your friends to come!

Remember...
4-H Camp Scholarships are available from the Cumberland County 4-H Federation. You need to attend a Federation Meeting to request funding.

Horse Ownership/Lease Papers

4-H'ers in the Horse & Pony project who plan to show at the 4-H Equine Challenge Show, or Illinois Jr. Horse show must have ownership/lease papers on file at the Extension office by May 1. The 4-H county horse show ownership papers must have all the above paperwork in the office by June 1st

Please include two photos, one for each side of every horse/pony you may ride in the shows.

4-H Enrollment

4-H member enrollments are due in the Extension Office by the 4-H Leaders no later than June 1, 2007; for members who plan to exhibit at the Cumberland County 4-H shows this summer. Members may be added or dropped from membership at any time, but after June 1, 2007, they are not eligible to show at this year's shows.

All youth must be 8 years of age or in third grade by September 1st of 2006 in order to enroll or exhibit.

Cloverbud members are not eligible for premium but may display their project at any of the 4-H shows.

Summer Job Opportunity

The Illinois State Fair Junior Department has openings for summer employment during the Illinois State Fair. Applications are available at the Cumberland County Extension Office or on the Illinois State 4-H website http://www.4-h.uiuc.edu/events/07fair/07jobapp.pdf.

There are job openings for set-up crews, superintendents, livestock staff, project staff and press department. Dates of employment vary dependent upon the position. Most positions are from August 5–August 19. Salaries also vary with position, and some positions require employees to be 21 years of age.

4-H Day With the Southern Illinois Miners

The Southern Illinois Region invites all 4-H members and their families to a Minor League Baseball Game on June 26, 2007 at 7:00 p.m. The newly formed Southern Illinois Miners baseball team is a member of the Frontier League. Come watch the team take on the Evansville Otters in their new, state of the art stadium, located off Interstate 57 in Marion, IL. If you would like a registration form please contact the Extension Office.

Photography Contest Sponsored by Effingham Equity

Current 4-H members are eligible to enter one 8"X10" photo which illustrates the theme, "Agriculture-Farm Life is the Best." Photos must have been taken in 2006 or 2007. Deadline for entries is August 1, 2007. Eleven winners will be selected and receive $50. Photos will be displayed at the Effingham Equity Corporate office. Grand prize winner will receive $100. For contest details, contact the Extension office.

Excellence In Agriculture Scholarship Program

Excellence In Agriculture Scholarship Program from the Illinois State Treasure Alexi Giannoulias will be awarding five $2,500 Scholarships. These Scholarships are annually awarded to Illinois high school students who plain to enroll as full-time Students in Agriculture or agriculture related studies. You can pick these applications up the Cumberland County Extension office. These applications have to be post marked by May 15, 2007.

If you are planning to pursue any AG field this would be a Scholarship for you.!!!!!!!!!

4-H Livestock Camp

June 10-12

Lawrence County Fairgrounds, Sumner, IL.

This three-day camp will offer hands-on sessions on Beef, Sheep, Swine and Goats. The camp will be open to 4-H Youth ages 8 and up.

The registration fee for the camp is $50.00 for 3 days of overnight camping in open pole barns, Registration is also available on a daily basis only $30.00 per day.

Registration forms must be filled out completely for each participant and return to the Cumberland County Extension office by May 15, 2007 along with the registration fee.

4-H PIE STAND

SUNDAY, MAY 20, 2007

Cumberland County 4-H will again be selling pie to the patrons of the Toledo Fire Department's Chicken Dinner during the Toledo Spring Festival. It is suggested that each club donate at least nine fruit pies (No cream pies, please, due to health department regulations.)

Leaders are encouraged to call the Extension Office to confirm pie donations.

Pies should be delivered to the Toledo Fire Hall after 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, May 20.

Funds raised from this event go directly toward 4-H publication expenses, which eliminates each club having to cover publication costs.

WANTED: Cancelled/Used Postage

The Jackson Co. 4-H Program is partnering with a local girl scout troop to collect cancelled postage stamps. These stamps are then sold to collectors outside the U.S. and the funds raised are used to purchase school uniforms, school supplies, and textbooks for needy children in India.

Metered mail stamps won't work, but any and all regular cancelled postage stamps your office or 4-H clubs/families could save and send to Jackson Co. would be MUCH appreciated. This is an on-going project, so there are no deadlines to note.

State Fair Premium Books

State fair premium books and livestock entry forms are now available via the State Fair web site. http://www.agr.state.il.us/isf/premium/index.html

Quality Assurance and Ethics Certification

The newly updated and revised Quality Assurance and Ethics Certification website is up for this year. 4-H and FFA youth can go to http://qaec.extension.uiuc.edu and go through their training. When they log-in and complete the training, your county Extension office will receive notification.

Take Charge of Change

What: Ninth Annual Illinois Leadership Conference ~ Take Charge of Change

This conference is designed for anyone in a leadership position, serving on a board of directors, working on community projects or with committees, and seek to manage and lead more effectively. Topics include community infrastructure, power in communities, innovations in housing design and financing, and developing your personal leadership improvement plan. Cost of the conference is $75, and includes all materials, refreshment breaks, and lunch. Scholarships are available. Participation is limited, so register early.

2007 Illinois 4-H Leadership Convention Highlights


June 28-30, 2007
University of Illinois, Champaign/Urbana

What Is ILC?
ILC is a 3-day event to provide Illinois High School teens new opportunities to explore the University of Illinois campus while focusing on developing specific leadership skills. This year's convention will focus on both basic and advanced leadership skills that youth need to excel in their local community and school activities. Eleven hours of educational learning experiences are being planned, focusing on Communication Skills, Team-Building, Youth and Adult Partnerships, Running a Meeting, Building Camaraderie and more.

In 2007, we are also introducing a separate Technology Summer Academy that is being offered in collaboration with the University of Illinois Graduate School of Library and Information Science. This special track will offer a limited number of teens 17 hours of a high impact, career-exploring look into technology as it relates to informational sciences, including web technology and podcasting experiences. Youth involved in the Technology Summer Academy will stay in the same dormitory and join ILC delegates for evening recreational activities.

What's the Cost?
This year, we are offering an early-bird registration fee of $150 to those who register prior to April 23. The registration fees after April 23 are $175 for ILC; $200 for the Technology Summer Academy. The fee covers a 2-night stay in University Housing (2 delegates per room); six meals; programming materials; workshop fees; and insurance.

When Is Everything Due?
Registration is due by May 21, 2007 . On-line registration will be available by April 2 at this web address. Delegates and chaperones may register on-line at this site OR may mail in registration materials. (NOTE: On-line registrants will still need to mail in health forms and conduct/media release agreements.)

Early-bird registration ($150) will be available until April 22. Registrations (postmarked or on-line) received after April 22 will cost $175; $200 for the Technology Summer Academy. Scholarship applications will be due by May 4. On-line registrations will not be accepted after midnight on Monday, May 21. Mailed registrations must be postmarked by Monday, May 21.

Illinois Farm Bureau Youth Education Committee

Two 4-H representatives are needed for August 1, 2006 through July 31, 2008 terms. The application is attached and is due by Friday, June 15. (Call the office and talk to Tonya for the application.)

Commitment information is on first page of application.

Application will be available via the 4-H website (Information for Field Staff/Teen Opportunities) shortly.

Illinois State 4-H Youth Leadership Team

There will be several spots opening on this team, starting September 1. Terms are 2 years. Applicants must be 16-19 years of age as of 9/1/2007 (can serve until they are 21).

Information on commitment and regional openings are on the application form. Application is available at the Extension office or it is also available on the 4-H website (Special Opportunities/Volunteerism/State 4-H Youth Leadership Team).

Applications are due by June 14 for interviews at ILC or August 1 for interviews during State Fair.

4-H Veterinary Science Award Application

4-H VeterinaryScience Award program, sponsored by the Auxiliary to the Illinois State Veterinary Medical Association. Applicants must be between the ages of 15 and 18 (inclusive) by September 1, 2006 and must have been enrolled in the Vet Science project at least 3 years (including the current year). Applications must by postmarked no later than July 2, 2007.

The State Winner will receive a $100 cash award. The Auxiliary to ISVMA will contact the winner and make arrangements for presentation of the award this fall.

4-H Exhibit Information

CUMBERLAND COUNTY 4-H AUCTION

1. Exhibitors will sell only one market entry, 4-H exhibitors. Will nominate a market entry to sell on the entry form, but may substitute a Grand Champion of they are fortunate to have one.

10. All Steers can be watered and fed on the day of the sale.

The steers will not be weighed back after the Jr. Show. All animals sell weight will be the weights as of Friday evening.

SHOWMANSHIP OF LARGE LIVESTOCK

Livestock showmanship classes are open to 4-H a exhibitor whose animal are part of the 4-H project and en ters in at least one class. Advance entries are not required and premiums will not be paid for these classes. Showmanship will be offered with all species exhibited at the fair. There will be two divisions of Showmanship, Junior Division and Senior Division.

Junior Division
3rd grade to 8th Grade of the current 4-H Year

Senior Division
9th grade through College.

BEEF

Class 8
Cow and Calf Pair.
A Cow of any age and a calf has to be born after January 1 of the current year.

HORSE/PONY

3. A horse being exhibited in the Horse and Pony project area must be trained and cared for by the ex hibitor and may be either owned or leased by the exhibitor or their immediate family. Proof of owner ship/leasing along with pictures (front, back and both sides) are to be submitted to the Extension Of fice no later than June 1, May1 if intending to exhibit at the Illinois State Fair.

4. Leasing will be allowed in the Cumberland County. Lease papers are available at the Cumberland County Extension Office.

Due May 1st if going to State Fair, June 1st if participating in the 4-H Horse/Pony Show.

The Show will start at 1:00 pm on Monday of the Fair.

Foods Projects

To exhibit a food project at the county level you do not have to do a skill-a-thon. You need to bring a baked good or a finished product to the Food show. If you want to have a skill-a-thon you need to contact the Extension Office two weeks before the Food Show.

This can be done in any of the Public Speaking Classes. This Class will not be eligible for State Fair. The group man include up to three people.

BBQ News

It's that time, once again, to start counting down to the 4-H BBQ. Now is the time to start selling those advance tickets. With everyone's help and cooperation we can make our fundraiser a success. Now here are a few tips on what you can do to help.

  • Sell advance tickets!
  • Post 4-H BBQ signs and flyers!
  • Advertise by word of mouth
  • Sign up to work at the 4-H BBQ and
  • Show up to work your shift.
  • Have your parents volunteer to work
  • Bake desserts for the 4-H BBQ (cookies, brownies, cakes, pies, etc)
  • SELL MORE TICKETS! To ensure a successful BBQ we need help, help, help! Anything volunteers are able to do will be greatly appreciated. Please be sure to sign the work schedule your leader has. This will be a very hectic day, but with advanced planning we will have a GREAT 4-H BBQ!

4-H Equine Challenge

The 4-H Equine Challenge is Saturday, June 9 at the Rock-N-A Ranch, Charleston. 4-H'ers from our region can compete on teams in halter, Western and English classes at the Rock-N-A Ranch. Teams consist of four 4-H members or horse/rider combo. Awesome prizes such as bridle bags, hat cans, saddle carriers, hay bags, engraved buckles or jackets are awarded to each member of winning teams.

Fees: $15 per rider or rider/horse combo and $5.00 grounds fee per horse.For more information please contact the Extension Office.

Sheep Giveaway - IL Suffolk Sheep Association

The IL Suffolk Sheep Association will give away a ewe lamb donated by Ireton Suffolks of Clare, IL to the winner of an essay contest.

Applicants ages 8 -21 living in Illinois may write a brief essay for the contest, stating why they want a Suffolk ewe lamb and what they plan to do with their sheep project. They must include a cover sheet with their name, contact information, age, parents' names, interests and activities, and any sheep experience. Sheep experience is NOT required.

Applicants must be mailed by June 1, 2007. The winner will be announced at the IL Suffolk Preview Show on June 9, 2007 in Eureka, IL. Applicant must be present there to win.

Attention IL State Fair 4-H Sheep Projects

Any sheep going to the 2007 ISF must be tattooed and electronically tagged. If you are interested in showing your sheep at the Illinois State Fair, they must be weighed, tattooed, and electronically tagged prior to May 15.

The cost for tagging is $2 per animal and must be paid the day of tagging. These animals MUST be identified at a regional site with the closest one being at the Coles County Fairgrounds on Saturday, May 5 at 10:30 a.m. – noon. Lambs must be castrated prior to tattooing for the wether classes.

Warren County Livestock Judging Contest

Warren County Fairgrounds, Roseville

Registration 8:00 a.m.

Contest begins at 9:00 a.m.

The contest will consist of 3 cattle, 3 swine and 2 sheep classes in both Jr. & Sr. Divisions. Team and individual awards will be given for overall and species winners.

Cost to participate will be $3.00 per person. Lunch is provided.

What is going on in the Schools????

Butterfly Curriculum

We released the Cumberland butterflies on April 25th. Please go visit them at the Butterfly House at the Natural Resource Education Area.

Butterfly larva were delivered to the Neoga Schools on April 26th the will be releasing butterflies at the end of the month.

Operation Safe Kids

We have had a few presenters so far and they have been great. We have had presentations Fire Safety from Jeff Winnet from the Greenup Fire Department and Internet Safety from Tonya Eich from the Extension Office. Still to present is Officer Tony Ortiz from the University of Illinois Police with Personal Safety, Telephone Skills (911), Water Safety with the Army Corp of Engineers of Lake Shelbyville, Basic First Aid with the Cumberland County Heath Department, ATV Safety, and then Babysitting Safety with the Child Care Resource & Referral, Eastern Illinois University

A big thanks to all of the teacher in the Neoga and Cumberland School for there participation in Operation Safe Kids and Butterflies.

Toledo Springfest - Wanting Riders

We are going to have a float for the parade.

We need your help to fill it.

Meet at 11:00 a.m. at the Toledo Christian Church to decorate.

Judging is at 12:00 noon

Then the big Parade at 1:00 p.m.

Please come dressed in very Colorful Clothing.

A light lunch will be served.
