Words from Joel

As the new Youth Educator at the Extension office, I am happy to share with you my life history. I was born in Lawrenceville where I stayed until the local school personnel had all of me they could take. In order to continue my quest of making the lives of teachers fulfilling, I then headed off to college. I first attended Vincennes University, a two year institution whose faculty and staff enjoyed my company for three years. Next, I took my knowledge to Carbondale.

While working on a degree in Speech Communication at SIU, I began to study Storytelling. I was stunned to learn that it was okay to write down tall tales and share them with people. All those years of perfecting my lying abilities in front of teachers, principals and my parents were finally starting to pay off. I was on my way to becoming a free-lance storyteller! However, I soon realized that being known as a storyteller could also be a liability. People would frequently question everything I would say – even when I told the truth. Therefore, I made a commitment to limiting my storytelling to around three days a week. The rest of the time I am honest. Sometimes though, I do get confused about which days are which. In addition, I cannot be held responsible for falsehoods stated in this newsletter article for I am unsure of the precise day that you will be reading it.

I spent several years ruining a landscaping business that I started. It took me nearly six years to go bankrupt. I have heard that some people can ruin a business a year or two, but I guess I am just a little slower than the average entrepreneur. While landscaping, I specialized in designing gardens using native plants and trees. I began my admiration of native plants and trees while I worked as a Resource Conservationist for the Crawford County Soil and Water Conservation District. I received my Master Gardener certification from Purdue University Extension in 1997.

In 2001, I moved to Tampa, Florida where I began to study for a career as a Lion Trainer with John and Mable Ringling in Sarasota. This career path was quickly abandoned when I discovered the more exciting and dangerous position of First Grade Teacher. After my hair turned white, I briefly dabbled in the field of Alligator Wrestling before fleeing the state altogether.

In my new position I am hoping to use my storytelling abilities, along with my teaching skills, to bring new and meaningful learning experiences to the lives of the students in Jasper and Cumberland counties. I am interested in working with teachers and students in the implementation of Story-Centered Curriculum, Storytelling, and Drama Programs to more fully develop positive character traits and communication skills. I am excited about the opportunity of assisting 4-H members with the many hands-on projects that are currently available.

I appreciate city living and have enjoyed a roof-top view of the Cubs when I lived in Chicago in 1990. My wife Susan, son Samuel and I recently moved to downtown Newton and are very thankful that the trains there do not operate as diligently as those in the Windy City.

Your Help is Needed

Club Leaders are reminded and encouraged to send the Extension Office a copy of your meeting locations, dates and times for the upcoming year as soon as they are finalized. When individuals contact the Extension Office interested in joining 4-H, a club program is a great item to have. Clubs also receive points on the Illinois 4-H Standards of Excellence award form for providing the Extension Office a club calendar.

Club Reporters are also reminded to send in club meeting minutes and activities for the monthly newsletter. The newsletter generally is printed and sent out the last week of each month for the upcoming month, not to mention it is a great way to share what your club is doing with the other 4-H clubs in the county.

Annie's Project - Education for Farm Women

  • Mondays & Wednesdays
  • February 6, 8, 13, 15, 20 & 22
  • 9:00 a.m. to Noon
  • Clark County Extension Building
  • Marshall, Illinois (1 mile south of Marshall on Route 1 )
  • Cost $50

A mother's successful struggle with a changing and challenging agricultural economy has led her daughter to create an educational program now helping farm women in five midwestern states. "Annie's Project" has involved over 300 women in Illinois alone, according to Ruth Hambleton, University of Illinois Extension farm business management and marketing educator based in Mount Vernon.

"Annie's Project" is six sessions of general agricultural education, encompassing financial education, ownership issues like titles, joint and sole ownership and titles, risk management, life and property insurance, and the use of Excel spreadsheets.

"At the end of the Excel training, we train farm women to use Farm Analysis Solution Tools (FAST) and deal with what the financial figures mean by pointing out key ratios to watch," she said. For the final session, the women participants pick the topic, usually requesting a session on grain marketing or more on financial management.

"Being married to a farmer or being a woman in a male-dominated business has its challenges," said Hambleton. "Some women have learned to handle this responsibility very well and are valuable mentors to women who have not had it so easy. Others need the knowledge and skills that help them gain confidence.

"'Annie's Project' empowers farm women to be better business partners through networks and by managing and organizing critical information."

Those interested in enrolling or obtaining more information should contact the Clark County Extension Office at
