We are investing research dollars to address two growing concerns in the Chicago metropolitan region: the impact of pharmaceuticals and personal care products that end up in waterways; and a limited drinking water supply for growing populations.

Occurrence and Ecological Effects of Pharmaceutical Chemicals in Chicago Metropolitan Area Streams

Loyola University researcher Emma Rosi-Marshall will assess the ecological effects of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in the waters of the Chicago metropolitan area. She defines these products as painkillers, antibiotics, caffeine, hormones, and other human chemicals that enter wastewater treatment facilities. Full proposal

The Flow Dimensions of Groundwater Resources in Northeastern Illinois

Douglas Walker, Illinois State Water Survey, and Albert Valocchi, University of Illinois, will research ways to improve aquifer modeling techniques for the fractured rock aquifers that lay beneath the Chicago metropolitan area. Full proposal

Past Research

During the past three decades the Water Resources Center has provided seed
money for many innovative projects. It has been at the forefront of such ideas as economic assessment of wetlands and recreation, biological treatment of acid mine drainage, bio-reclamation of contaiminated ground-water, and analysis of important public water projects such as dams, sewer systems and flood control systems.
