What is IWRC?

IWRC is part of a national program, authorized by section 104 of the Water Resources Research Act of 1984, and is a Federal-State partnership which:

  • Plans, facilitates, and conducts research to aid in the resolution of State and regional water problems
  • Promotes technology transfer and the dissemination and application of research results
  • Provides for the training of scientists and engineers through their participation in research
  • Provides for competitive grants to be awarded under the Water Resources Research Act

There are 54 Water Resources Institutes of Center located in each states and US territory. Most are located at the state's land-grant university or a university designated by the governor or state legislature. The state water resources research institutes authorized by the Act are organized as the National Institutes for Water Resources (NIWR). NIWR cooperates with the USGS in establishing total programmatic direction, reporting on the activities of the Institutes, coordinating and facilitating regional research and information and technology transfer, and in operating the NIWR-USGS Student Internship Program.

What are the primary activities of IWRC?

IWRC promotes research, education and outreach to the citizens of Illinois about water resources issues. Activities of note include:

  • A biennial Illinois Water conference, attended by over 200 water resources professionals from around Illinois ;
  • An annual newsletter, discussing important water-related issues in the state;
  • Participation in the University Council on Water resources, which, among other things, awards an annual doctorial fellowship. Illinois has sponsored the winning candidate for the past 2 years.
  • Research funding, at the state and federal level.
