A Petting Zoo will be held in conjunction with the Fairfield Pumpkin Festival on Saturday, October 3 starting at 11 a.m. It will be set up on the east side of the Courthouse lawn. Any 4-H'er willing to participate by bringing one or more animals should call the Extension Office at 842-3702. Your help would be appreciated.

That's right – all over the nation, 4-H clubs will be celebrating National 4-H Week, October 4-10. Wayne County is doing its part.

Public service announcements will be aired on WFIW during 4-H Week, recorded by some of our own 4-H'ers, and Wayne County Press is running a special page promoting 4-H too.

So, keep your eyes and ears open for these fun ways we're promoting 4-H during National 4-H Week.

Everyone likes recognition. If you're a 4-Her, consider Wayne County 4-H Achievement night your opportunity to be recognized for all your hard work throughout the 4-H year.

Scholarships for 4-H camp, trips, conventions and conferences will be awarded. Cloverbuds, first year, ten year and retiring 4-H members will be recognized, as well as those turning in end-of-the-year records and State Fair participants. Other awards such as Project medals and trophies, Victory Awards, and naming the Friend of 4-H and 4-H Alumni for 2009 will also be on the evening's program.

Achievement Night is scheduled for Tuesday, October 6^th at the Geff Ruritan Building. The evening's festivities will start at 7 p.m. with the awards presentations followed by light refreshments. This should prove to be an enjoyable time for the entire 4-H family. We hope to see you there!

Approximately 250 people enjoyed a wonderful meal at the 4-H Foundation Pork Chop Fundraiser. A huge thanks to all 4-H Foundation members, 4-H leaders, 4-H members and parents for working to make this event a success! A special thank you to the Geff Ruritan Club for all of their time and effort. The Ruritans prepare and donate the baked beans, cole slaw, homemade rolls and drinks. 100% of the profit from this event is used for 4-H college scholarships, camp scholarships, fairground improvements, trophies and other forms of support for the Wayne County 4-H program.

Congratulations to the following 4-H members for working hard to be the top three ticket sellers: 1^st place - Sara Buchanan; 2^nd place – Jentzi Schumm; & 3^rd place – Katlyn Maloy.

Due to the State 4-H Office directed changes in the 4-H program, a Leaders Meeting will be held on Tuesday, October 27 in the Extension Office meeting room. The evening will start with a meal at 6:30 p.m., followed by a discussion of the new risk management tools, program fee, publication fee, and upcoming events for the year. This meeting is for ALL club leaders. Please try to see that your club is represented. Contact the Extension Office at 842-3702 for the meal count by October 23.

If you are a high school teen interested in learning about our nation's capital then you should plan to attend the 2010 Washington Focus Trip scheduled for July 10 – 17. The exact cost of the trip is not know at this time but will be at least $1000, which includes transportation, lodging, most meals, program costs, dinner theater and more! The trip is open to all youth ages 15 –18 as of May 1, 2010.

Since this trip is only held every other year, the committee that judged 4-H records was afraid that not everyone understood this and didn't have the opportunity to submit an award application. Therefore, award applications for Citizenship Washington Focus will be accepted until October 23. Please request a new application from Matt by calling the Extension Office at 842-3702 or email mattrush@illinois.edu.

Be aware that if your club is planning on new t-shirts, please check with the office for correct policies covering use of the 4-H clover emblem. Specific colors must be used, no printing may be over the clover, and the USC symbol should be present with the clover.

The 4-H Round Robin Showmanship Contest was held on July 23^rd at the Fairgrounds. Junior and senior species winners were judged on their ability to show goats, sheep, swine, beef and horses. The junior showmanship trophy was awarded to Dylan Toombs. The senior showmanship trophy went to Ethan Keyser.

The Wayne County 4-H Tractor Rodeo was held on Monday, July 20^th. Participants took a written exam and showed their driving skills through a prescribed course. The Top Tractor Driver Trophy winner was Matthew Byars.

The 4-H Dog Obedience Show was held Thursday, July 10^th at the Wayne County Fairgrounds 4-H Arena. Dylan Toombs took home the Dog Obedience trophy sponsored by Fairfield Veterinary Hospital.

Wayne County 4-Hers garnered the highest honors on five of the 18 projects exhibited at the Illinois State Fair.

Judges awarded superior ribbons to only the top 10 percent of the projects in each division. Earning superior ribbons from Wayne County were Johna Bailey in Floriculture, Bayli Gill in Foods & Nutrition, Justin Gill in Photography, Jake Howell in Foods & Nutrition, and Christina Walker in Natural Resources.

Awards of excellence for outstanding work were earned by Bryan Bailey, David Harl, Billy Hatfield, Emily Hatfield, Kayla Howell, Collin Koker, Dylan Mayes, Hillary Scarbrough, Jentzi Schumm, Ethan Spicer, Hayley Spicer, Dylan Toombs, and Chelsie Walker.

A pumpkin's bright orange color is a giveaway that it is loaded with beta-carotene, an important antioxidant. Beta-carotene is also in other yellow and orange fruits and vegetables such as mangoes, papayas, and carrots.

Foods that contain beta-carotene may reduce the risk of developing certain types of cancer. They also offer protection against heart disease and some aspects of aging . . . something that will interest your parents!

Native Americans dried strips of pumpkin and wove them into mats. They also roasted long strips of pumpkin on the open fire and ate them. The origin of pumpkin pie occurred when the colonists sliced off the pumpkin top, removed the seeds, and filled the insides with milk, spices, and honey. The pumpkin was then baked in hot ashes.

• Pumpkin flowers are edible.
• The largest pumpkin pie ever made was over 5 feet in diameter and weighed more than 350 pounds. It used 80 pounds of cooked pumpkin, 36 pounds of sugar, 12 dozen eggs, and took six hours to bake.
• Pumpkins were once recommended for removing freckles and curing snake bites.
• The largest pumpkin ever grown weighed 1,140 pounds.
• Pumpkins are fruit.
• Native Americans used pumpkin seeds for food and medicine.

Pumpkin Pudding

1 large package instant vanilla pudding

1 can (12 oz) evaporated milk

1 can (16 oz) pumpkin

½ teaspoon pumpkin pie spice or ground cinnamon

½ teaspoon vanilla extract

Non-dairy whipped topping

Instructions

1. Prepare pudding according to package directions except substitute evaporated milk for regular milk.

2. Chill the pudding until it thickens, about 10 to 15 minutes.

3. Add pumpkin, spices, and vanilla to the pudding and mix thoroughly.

4. Chill before serving.

5. Top with non-dairy whipped topping before serving.
