PQA Requirements for State Fair
Youth Pork Quality Assurance Certification is required for any exhibitor showing junior barrows, open barrows, or Premiere barrows at the 2008 Illinois State Fair.
In reaction to most US packers requiring PQA, the Illinois State Fair is mandating this certification for its exhibitors in these swine classes. Proof of PQA Certification will be part of the Illinois State Fair entry forms due July 1.
- It is encouraged (not mandated) that youth 9-13 years of age be accompanied by a parent or guardian during the class.
- The parent or guardian cannot become certified by accompanying their child at a Youth PQA class; bust must attend an adult PQA Level III program to become certified or have a veterinarian certify them at there farm during a routine visit.
- Youth 19 years of age or older must become certified through the adult PQA Level III education program.
- Youth 9-13 years of age must re-certify annually by attending a Youth PQA education program.
- Youth under 9 years of age cannot be certified in Youth PQA, but may sell a pig under their parent or guardian's Adult PQA Level III certification.
A PQA training session has been scheduled for June 23 at 7 p.m. at the Extension Office. Please call to attend this session at 842-3702.
4-H Federation Plans Porkburger Sale

The Federation plans and carries out activities for all 4-H members in Wayne County. Workers are needed to make this project run smoothly, so please call the office to let Matt know if you'll be able to help out.

Livestock Testing for Fair Animals
All livestock exhibited must conform to the current year's Illinois Livestock Exhibition Regulations as stated under the general livestock rules of the Wayne County Fair Association. Health papers, as required, must accompany all animals to the Fairgrounds. Dr. Loy Hosselton has offered to test and inspect your livestock project free of charge. All you need to do is call Dr. Hosselton at 842-4884 to set up an appointment. Be prepared to let him know the kind of animal, how many, and directions to your farm.
Congratulations 4-H College Scholarship Winners
Every year the Wayne County 4-H Foundation has the opportunity to award $500 college scholarships to three outstanding 4-H'ers. The winners are selected based on a well-rounded 4-H career. Some areas considered are 4-H projects and diversity, years in 4-H, serving as an officer, 4-H citizenship, leadership outside of 4-H, and academics. The 2008 winners are Lian States from Fairfield Community High School, Jarod Fearn from Cisne High School and Katie Hatfield from Wayne City High School. Congratulations and best of luck to all three!

Latest News about State Fair
With the budget restrictions facing Extension, the following changes have been made for Wayne County 4-H members at the Illinois State Fair. Participants to the fair are selected during the county 4-H Show in July. Complete instructions will be given to those who qualify.
- ALL Wayne County exhibits will be judged at the State Fair on Tuesday, Aug. 12, including all public speaking and fashion review entries. The only exception is the Bicycle Rodeo which will be held Aug. 16.
- Participants must take their own projects to the State Fair. After each class is finished and awards given, the projects will be immediately released. No security will be provided. Members should secure their project when instructed and remove it to a safe location once the judge releases it officially.
- The Wayne County Extension Office will order a limited number of parking passes & gate admission tickets. These will be available on a first come first served basis.
- Members may still exhibit in 1 action presentation (bicycle, public speaking or fashion review) and 1 conference judged project (all others).
- Be sure to read the State Fair information very carefully. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to call the office at 842-3702.
