Kits available are: Argentina, Croatia, India, Japan #1, Korea and New Zealand.

2007 4-H Achievement Night

4-H members, 4-H clubs, 4-H alumni, and friends were honored at the Geff Ruritan Building during the 4-H Achievement Night program held Tuesday, October 23. The following awards were presented:

Wayne-White Electric Cooperative was presented the Friend of 4-H Award (sponsored by Wayne County 4-H Foundation). Wayne-White is always willing to lend a helping hand to 4-H and was recognized for such twenty-five years ago in 1982. The 4-H program in Wayne County felt that is was once again time to recognize them and thank them for their "friendship" over the years. They have sponsored the 4-H leaders' banquets for many years. The electricity awards presented at Achievement Night were provided by a monetary donation from Wayne-White. In addition, many of the 4-H buildings at the fairgrounds were wired in part by Wayne-White employees donating their time and services. Most recently, Wayne-White Electric Cooperative sponsored an electricity workshop at the Extension Office. Participants learned about the history of Wayne-White, viewed a safety video, and constructed a soda can lamp.

The 4-H Alumni Award went to Ted & Angela Davis, who have served as leaders of the Geff Chatters 4-H Club in Wayne County for 11 years. Even though their children are grown and too old for 4-H, they continue to serve the 4-H youth of Wayne County. Therefore, the Wayne County 4-H Foundation was happy to present them with the 2007 4-H Alumni Award and thank them for all they've done and continue to do for the 4-H program in Wayne County.

Fit Kidz . . . Eat Colorful Veggies

Sometimes it's hard to know whether a certain food is nutritious just by looking at it. With vegetables, the color often acts as a code that shows us what the vegetable has to offer. Check out these veggie facts:

  • Red, orange, and yellow vegetables contain beta carotene, which is believed to fight cancer and strengthen the immune system. The immune system protects us against colds and other illnesses.
  • Dark, leafy greens–such as lettuce and spinach–fight eye diseases and cancer.
  • Broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage, which are called cruciferous vegetables, also help fight against cancer.
  • Tomatoes have lycopene, which helps to fight cancer. Some fruits, like pink grapefruit and watermelon, contain lycopene, too.

Recipe of the Month

Easy Veggie Dip
1 cup low-fat sour cream
1 cup low-fat vanilla yogurt
1 package dry ranch salad dressing mix

Mix together all three ingredients. Refrigerate dip for at least 30 minutes. Serve with a variety of cleaned, cut-up vegetables.

North Pole Crafts Club

Parents, are your children looking for a fun activity to keep them busy after school? Then the University of Illinois Extension's 4-H North Pole Crafts Club is for them!

Your children can come make fun, festive holiday cards and other creative crafts. Different crafting techniques will be taught each session. Children will also have an opportunity to work on important life skills. A light snack will be provided at each meeting and will be conducted by U of I Extension youth development educator Renate Jobst with Wayne County 4-H community worker Matt Rush assisting.

The program is open to all children in grades 3 through 5. The club will meet Nov. 19, 20, 27, Dec. 3, 4 and 10. It will begin after school (as soon as children can arrive) and will end at 4:30. It will take place at the Wayne County Extension office in Fairfield.

Fee for all 6 sessions is $7 per participant. There is also a registration form that needs to be turned in with payment. Registration and the fee are due November 16. The forms are available at the Extension office at No. 2-B Frontier Drive in Fairfield, or online at: http://web.extension.uiuc.edu/hww/downloads/9106.pdf.

If you need special accommodations, please contact the office at 842-3702. University of Illinois Extension offers a wide array of outstanding youth programs through its youth outreach, 4-H. For information on your child joining 4-H, contact your local Extension office.

Return Unused 4-H Project Manuals

At this time of year when fall house cleaning is in full swing, the Extension office wants to encourage 4-H members and leaders to return any unused project manuals that might be lying around or have gone unclaimed.
