Illinois State Fair

Now that the Wayne County Fair is over, it's time to get ready for State Fair. The Southern Region day at Illinois State Fair is Saturday, August 11. Any 4-H'ers who will be participating in conference judging or an action event (Public Presentations, Food Skill-A-Thons, etc.) will compete on this day. A complete list of all 4-H'ers along with their State Fair awards will be printed in next month's newsletter.

Hunter Safety Course Offered

A Hunter Safety Course is being offered on August 24 & 25 at the Fairfield Gun Club. Friday evening's class session will last from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The Saturday session will be all day from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Don't forget to bring a sack lunch! Remember, you must attend class on both days for certification. This class is limited to 40 participants, so call the Extension office to register ASAP.

Deadline Approaching for End-of-the-Year Records

Remember that your Wayne County 4-H records are due to the Extension Office by Thursday, August 31. If you haven't received your records to fill out yet, you may get those from your club leader. As a way to make records grading a little easier, please remember to put your name and your 4-H age on every page (your age as of September 1, 2006).

4-H Auction Was Huge Success

Over $20,000 was generously bid on 4-H animal projects at the Wayne County 4-H Livestock Auction, Thursday evening, July 19. Sixty-one 4-H members sold their rabbit, poultry, sheep, goat, swine and beef projects to the highest bidder. Thirty-one different businesses and individuals successfully purchased animals. 4-H Beef Show Winners

The Wayne County 4-H Beef Show was held at the Wayne County Fairgrounds on Tuesday, July 17.

Ryan Kinney exhibited the Grand Champion Steer and the Reserve Champion Steer was shown by Jordan Kinney.

In the Angus classes, Ryan Kinney exhibited the Champion Female and the Reserve Champion Female.

In the Other Breeds classes, Whitney Johnson exhibited the Champion Female and the Reserve Champion Female was shown by Katie Hatfield.

The Champion Female and Reserve Champion Female over all breeds were exhibited by Ryan Kinney.

Whitney Hedrick won the Rate of Gain contest. Matthew Byars was awarded the Bucket Calf Trophy. Selected as Senior Showman was Keith Catron with Meg Keyser, Alternate. Eric Schumm won Junior Showman and Vanessa Schumm, Alternate.

Round Robin Showmanship

The 4-H Round Robin Showmanship Contest was held on July 19 at the Fairgrounds. Junior and senior species winners were judged on their ability to show goats, sheep, swine, beef and horses. The junior showmanship trophy was awarded to Delaney York. The senior showmanship trophy went to Meg Keyser.

Tractor Rodeo

The Wayne County 4-H Tractor Rodeo was held on Monday, August 16. Participants took a written exam and showed their driving skills through a prescribed course. The Top Tractor Driver Trophy winner was Jarod Fearn.

Dog Obedience Show Held

The 4-H Dog Obedience Show was held Saturday, July 7 at the Wayne County Fairgrounds 4-H Arena with six participants. State Fair and Trophy winners were as follows:

4-H Pork Chop Dinner

It's time for the annual Wayne County 4-H Foundation Pork Chop Dinner! It will be held on Saturday, August 18 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Geff Ruritan Building. Tickets have been distributed to each 4-H club. We ask that each 4-H family sell at least one pack of five tickets. If you need additional tickets, please stop by the Extension Office. The Wayne County 4-H Foundation will be awarding prizes to the top three ticket sellers. First place will receive $25, second will receive $15 and third will receive $10. Each club is also asked to send a few workers to the dinner. Please help support the 4-H Foundation Pork Chop Dinner. The Wayne County 4-H Foundation supports numerous 4-H events through the funding of scholarships, camp fees, and fairground improvements, just to name a few.

*Please turn in any tickets that have been pre-sold to the Extension Office by Wednesday, August 15. You may keep selling tickets up until the day of the dinner, but this will give us an idea of approximately how many to expect.

Each 4-H Club is asked to furnish two sheet cakes as well. Please bring them to the Geff Ruritan Building before 4:30 p.m. on August 18. In addition, volunteer workers are needed. We ask that each club provide at least three workers for the time they are scheduled for below. Workers should plan to arrive 15-20 minutes prior to their shift.

Discover Chicago Planned for October 6-8

Enjoy three jam-packed days of fun learning in one of our nation's largest cities on the Discover Chicago trip scheduled for October 6-8. This unique opportunity is open to youth in the grades 5, 6, and 7 this September, regardless of 4-H membership.

Participants will visit the Museum of Science and Industry where they can build a robot, walk through a human heart, land an F-14, and explore a coal mine; dine on a medieval feast while watching brave knights show off their skills at Medieval Times; view Chicago from the Sears Tower; experience nature, science and history at Chicago's elegant and exciting Field Museum; and eat at the popular Rain Forest Café.

Cost for the trip is $250 and that includes admission to all attractions, lodging at the Embassy Suites Hotel, charter bus transportation, meals, insurance, and t-shirt. The registration deadline is August 31, but space is limited and on a first-come basis.

Culture Kits Available for 2007-2008

The Extension Office has just received word that the following Culture Kits have been assigned to the Southern Region for the 2007-2008 4-H year. These kits contain articles, information, and insight into the country's lifestyle and geography. Call the office to reserve a kit and month. Kits available are: India, Japan #1, Korea, Argentina mini, Croatia, and New Zealand mini.

Planning Underway for Pumpkin Festival

The second annual Pumpkin Festival is scheduled for October 26 & 27 in Fairfield. 4-H has been asked to participate in this community activity. A petting zoo has been mentioned, but other ideas are welcome. Matt will be attending the next planning meeting August 20.

Southern Illinois Leadership Convention is New for 2007!

Don't be unprepared for your future! Check out a brand new leadership event for Illinois high school students and all other teens not yet 19 by September 1, 2007!

The Southern Illinois Leadership Convention is for all teens meeting the age requirement in Illinois. The convention is October 6-8 at Touch of Nature Environmental Center just south of Carbondale, Illinois. In addition to fun outdoor events like trust walks, dances, and team games, the convention features workshops on important topics focusing on youth leadership in today's world. Cost is $120 if registered by August 31 and $140 if by September 14, which includes lodging, meals, and all program activities.

Space is limited, so sign up early. Convention attendees do not have to be 4-H members, so bring a friend. Check out this website for more information and to access registration materials:
