Get Ready for Conference Judging

It is not unusual for you to feel scared when you get your projects judged at the Fair. Here are some tips so you will know what to expect. Just remember that judging is a learning experience so you can understand what you did well, and what you might need to improve on for next year.

  • During conference judging, the judge will encourage you to talk about your project.
  • You will be asked questions about your project, so be prepared to discuss the methods used to produce the project and what you learned from doing it.
  • Read and follow rules and requirements carefully in the 4-H Showbook.
  • Practice good sportsmanship.
  • Listen carefully to the judge so that you can accept constructive criticism and learn from it.
  • Remember- judging comments are helpful, but they are only one person's opinion.
  • Projects are evaluated, not people. Projects are evaluated individually, not compared.
  • Remember that people sometimes make mistakes.

Fairgrounds Clean-up Day

Wayne County 4-H Fairgrounds clean-up day has been set for Wednesday, July 11 from 9am-noon. Please make plans to help prepare for the Fair! Clean-up will be easy if everyone helps, not just livestock exhibitors. Please bring water hoses, bailing wire, pliers, hammers, nails, rakes, brooms, buckets, rags, mowers, weed eaters, etc. We would greatly appreciate your assistance! Pizza and sodas will be provided by the 4-H Federation for all workers.

Federation To Meet

The Federation will conduct a short business meeting during Fairgrounds Clean-Up on Wednesday, July 11th. Details need to be finalized on the placemat ad sales also. Hope to see you then.

4-H Pork Chop Dinner

Before you know it, Fair will be over and it'll be time for the annual 4-H Foundation Pork Chop Dinner! The event will be held on Saturday, August 18 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Geff Ruritan Building. Tickets will be available soon. We ask that each 4-H family sell at least one pack of five tickets. The Wayne County 4-H Foundation will be awarding prizes to the top three ticket sellers. First place will receive $25, second will receive $15 and third will receive $10. Each club is also asked to supply workers. Be sure to check with your leader to see when your club is scheduled to work. Please help promote and support the 4-H Foundation Pork Chop Dinner. The Wayne County 4-H Foundation supports numerous 4-H events through the funding of scholarships, camp fees, and Fairground improvements, to name a few.

We would like to extend a special thanks to the Geff Ruritan Club for their continued support of Wayne County 4-H.

Discover Chicago Planned for October 6-8

Enjoy three jam-packed days of fun learning in one of our nation's largest cities on the Discover Chicago trip scheduled for October 6-8. This unique opportunity is open to youth in the 5th, 6th, and 7th grades this September, regardless of 4-H membership.

Participants will visit the Museum of Science and Industry where they can build a robot, walk through a human heart, land an F-14, and explore a coal mine; dine on a medieval feast while watching brave knights show off their skills at Medieval Times; view Chicago from the Sears Tower; experience nature, science and history at Chicago's elegant and exciting Field Museum; and eat at the popular Rain Forest Café.

Cost for the trip is $250 and that includes admission to all attractions, lodging at the Embassy Suites Hotel, charter bus transportation, meals, insurance, and t-shirt. The registration deadline is August 31st, but space is limited and on a first-come basis.

Derek Greifzu, Katie Liston, Mikaela Matthews, Chelsie Walker and Jenny Lane were awarded $100 scholarship from the 4-H Foundation at Achievement Night last year.

For more details, contact the Extension Office at 842-3702 or check out the following website: http://web.extension.uiuc.edu/regions/4h/discover/Chicago.htm

Tap Into Your Tech Creativity!

After the 4-H show is complete, it's time to relax and do the things you love. For instance, do you enjoy playing computer games? How about creating your own! Scratch (http://scratch.mit.edu/) is an easy, fun website where you can create your own computer projects. You just need a computer with internet access. You can check out other people's projects or create your own unique game. In order to do either, you need to download the software and create a user login.

The website for Children, Youth, and Families at Risk (CYFAR) Program offers monthly missions and the most recent one is creating a new computer game! Go to

http://www.cyfernet.org/4htech/missions.html to find out more information.

How does this fit into 4-H? It's technology, of course, and the type of game you create could go along with any project you choose. You could create a game that teaches about dog care, food and nutrition, etc. The sky's the limit!

If you create a really cool game, just e-mail me at brooking@uiuc.edu! I'd love to see some creativity out there!

Note to Parents: Put It in Perspective

First, try to put the 4-H Show in perspective. The county 4-H show is only one part of the total 4-H learning experience. Serving as an officer or on a committee, giving a talk or demonstration, going to a project meeting or workshop, completing activities from a project activity guide, and going to camp are some of the hundreds of experiences a 4-Her gains throughout the year.

The development of young people is our first consideration in 4-H work. We are more concerned about what the 4-H'er learns than with the exhibit.

If you have concerns during the 4-H show, DO NOT approach judges or superintendents directly. FIRST, go to your club leader. If your leader is not present, express your concern to Extension staff. Remember, we may not always agree with a judge's decision, but they are the expert for the day, and as so, deserve our respect. Most have donated their time for YOUR child. It is never appropriate to be verbally abusive to a judge or superintendent.

Part of learning to win is learning to lose. Praise your child accordingly and teach by example. It will be all right!

University of Illinois Extension and 4-H cares about your child.
