Now that the Wayne County Fair is over, it's time to get ready for State Fair. Wayne County's day at Illinois State Fair is Tuesday, August 12. Any 4-H'er who will be participating in conference judging or an action presentation, with the exception of bicycle, will compete on this day. A complete list of all 4-H'ers along with their State Fair awards will be printed in next month's newsletter.
Hunter Safety Course Offered
A Hunter Safety Course is being offered on August 15 & 16 at the Fairfield Gun Club. Friday evening's class session will last from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The Saturday session will be all day from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Don't forget to bring a sack lunch! Remember, you must attend class on both days for certification. This class is limited to 40 participants, so call the Extension office to register ASAP.
Deadline Approaching for End-of-the-Year Records
Remember that your Wayne County 4-H records are due to the Extension Office by Friday, August 29. If you haven't received your records to fill out yet, you may get those from your club leader. As a way to make records grading a little easier, please remember to put your name and your 4-H age on every page (your age as of September 1, 2007).

4-H Auction Was Huge Success
Over $19,000 was generously bid on 4-H animal projects at the Wayne County 4-H Livestock Auction, Thursday evening, July 17. Fifty-four 4-H members sold their rabbit, poultry, sheep, goat, swine and beef projects to the highest bidder. Thirty-six different businesses and individuals successfully purchased animals.

2008 4-H Foods Show Winners

The Wayne County 4-H Horse Show was held at the Wayne County Saddle Club on Saturday, July 12 and Monday, July 14. Trophy winners were selected as follows:

The Wayne County 4-H Beef Show was held at the Wayne County Fairgrounds on Tuesday, July 15.
Jordan Kinney exhibited the Grand Champion Steer and the Reserve Champion Steer was shown by Katie Hatfield.
In the Angus classes, Ethan Keyser exhibited the Champion Female and Jordan Kinney the Reserve Champion Female.
In the Other Breeds classes, the Champion and Reserve Champion Female were shown by Katie Hatfield.
The Champion Female over all breeds was exhibited by Ethan Keyser with Katie Hatfield exhibiting the Reserve Champion Female over all breeds.
Billy Hatfield won the Rate of Gain contest. Eric Schumm was awarded the Bucket Calf Trophy. Selected as Senior Showman was Jentzi Schumm with Aaron Maloy, Alternate. Billy Hatfield won Junior Showman and Shelby Johnson, Alternate.
4-H Sheep & Goat Show Winners

The 4-H Goat Show was also held Tuesday, July 15 at the Wayne County Fairgrounds. The winners were as follows:
The 4-H Round Robin Showmanship Contest was held on July 17 at the Fairgrounds. Junior and senior species winners were judged on their ability to show goats, sheep, swine, beef and horses. The junior showmanship trophy was awarded to Dylan Toombs. The senior showmanship trophy went to Ethan Keyser.
Tractor Rodeo
The Wayne County 4-H Tractor Rodeo was held on Monday, August 14. Participants took a written exam and showed their driving skills through a prescribed course. The Top Tractor Driver Trophy winner was Matthew Byars.
Dog Obedience Show Held
The 4-H Dog Obedience Show was held Thursday, July 10 at the Wayne County Fairgrounds 4-H Arena with five participants. Trophy winners were as follows:

Southern Illinois Leadership Convention "Polishing the Diamond of Leadership"
Come enjoy the wonder of Southern Illinois while having fun, making new friends, and developing your leadership skills. The second annual Southern Illinois Leadership Convention is being planned for Columbus Day weekend. The site for the convention is Southern Illinois University Carbondale's Touch of Nature Environmental Center. Located seven miles south of Carbondale on Giant City Road, the outdoor learning site features state-of-the-art cabins and beautiful educational settings.
Along with great workshops, there are dances, trust walks, fun mixers and games, and a special Sunday night program. Come ready to show what you know during Trivia Night!
The convention starts with registration from 8-10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 11, and ends at 11 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 13. You have the chance during the weekend to help with one of four different community service projects.
Cost is $140 if registered by August 29 and $160 if by September 6, which includes lodging, meals, and all program activities. Fifteen scholarships are available. Scholarship applications must be sent to the local University of Illinois Extension Office for review and must be received by September 6.
Space is limited, so sign up early. Convention attendees do not have to be 4-H members, so bring a friend. Check out this website for more information and to access registration materials:
It's time for the annual Wayne County 4-H Foundation Pork Chop Dinner! It will be held on Saturday, August 16 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Geff Ruritan Building. Tickets have been distributed to each 4-H club. We ask that each 4-H family sell at least one pack of five tickets. If you need additional tickets, please stop by the Extension Office. The Wayne County 4-H Foundation will be awarding prizes to the top three ticket sellers. First place will receive $25, second will receive $15 and third will receive $10. Each club is also asked to send a few workers to the dinner. Please help support the 4-H Foundation Pork Chop Dinner. The Wayne County 4-H Foundation supports numerous 4-H events through the funding of scholarships, camp fees, and fairground improvements, just to name a few.
*Please turn in any tickets that have been pre-sold to the Extension Office by Wednesday, August 13. You may keep selling tickets up until the day of the dinner, but this will give us an idea of approximately how many to expect.
Each 4-H Club is asked to furnish two sheet cakes as well. Please bring them to the Geff Ruritan Building before 4:30 p.m. on August 16. In addition, volunteer workers are needed. We ask that each club provide at least three workers for the time they are scheduled for below. Workers should plan to arrive 15-20 minutes prior to their shift.

Discover Chicago: Join the Adventure
If you'll be in the fifth, sixth or seventh grade this September, join us for the Discover Chicago trip October 11-13.
Discover Chicago is three jam-packed days of fun learning in one of our nation's largest cities. You'll learn about geography, history and science as you explore famous attractions in Chicago.
Participants will visit the Museum of Science and Industry where they can build a robot, walk through a human heart, land an F-14, and explore a coal mine; dine on a medieval feast while watching brave knights show off their skills at Medieval Times; view Chicago from the John Hancock Center; experience nature, science and history at Chicago's elegant and exciting Field Museum; and eat at the popular Rain Forest Café.
Cost for the trip is $295 and that includes admission to all attractions, lodging at the Embassy Suites Hotel, charter bus transportation, meals, and insurance. The registration deadline is August 29, but space is limited. Your friends who are not 4-Hers can attend, too.
We're also taking applications for adult chaperones. The fee for chaperones is the same as for youth.
Vanessa Schumm, Collin Koker, Ethan Spicer, Michaela Smith and Eric Schumm were awarded $100 scholarship from the 4-H Foundation at Achievement Night last year.

Achievement Night Planned
Everyone likes recognition. Consider Wayne County 4-H Achievement night your opportunity to get recognized for all your hard work throughout the 4-H year.
Achievement Night is scheduled for Tuesday, October 7 at 6 p.m. at the Geff Ruritan Building. Several awards and scholarships will be presented. First year members, ten-year members, Cloverbuds, and state fair winners will also be recognized, as well as those who turned in end-of-the-year records. Premium money will be distributed.

Youth Educator Renate Jobst has accepted a job with Extension in Indiana through Purdue University. Her last day in the office will be Aug. 10. Renate provided valuable help to all youth in Hamilton, Wayne and White counties. We wish her well in her new job!
