Master Gardener Classes Start in January

University of Illinois Extension is in the business of providing education so you can put the knowledge to work. The organization is composed of professional educators and volunteers. One of the strongest volunteer efforts is the Master Gardener program.

Master gardeners are a vital link in getting horticulture knowledge to the public. They provide quick answers to a variety of home gardening questions. The volunteer receives more than 60 hours of in-depth training from University of Illinois Educators and specialists. The information is presented practically, yet making sure it is unbiased and research-based. Classes include basic botany, vegetables, tree fruits, small fruits, insects, diseases, soils, fertilizers and ornamentals such as trees and flowers.

The Henderson-Mercer-Warren Extension Unit is accepting applications now through December 1, 2009 from residents of the three county area who desire to participate in the Master Gardener training program to be conducted in Macomb beginning January 14, 2010 and in Rock Island beginning in January 15, 2010. Classes will be conducted from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. for 10 weeks.

Once trained, Master Gardeners Volunteers are asked to complete 60 hours of pre-approved volunteer community service. Persons interested in participating in the Master Gardener training program should contact now the Henderson-Mercer-Warren Extension Unit in Stronghurst at 924-1163, in Aledo at 582-5106 or in Monmouth at 734-5161 for more information or to secure an application. Participants must be 18 years of age or older to apply. Completed applications must be submitted by December 1, 2009.
