ATTENTION 4-H Members, Families and Friends.
The 2009 4-H Fair will be held the week of July 6th-July 10th. Please mark your calendars and start thinking about projects that you would like to bring to the fair. Keep track of deadline dates as posted in the newsletters! We look forward to seeing you!
Sincerely,
Extension Staff
Leaders….Mark your calendar for the meeting to be held March 16th at 6:30 pm at the Extension building. Project manuals and 4-H Fairbooks will be handed out, along with discussing changes that will be implemented at this year's 4-H Fair. One leader from each club should be present. We will have food available, so please let us know by March 12 if you can attend so arrangements can be made.
Community Service Project
If your club is looking for a one-day project...the 4-H Building & Grounds would like areas of the parking lot repainted (ie, curbs, poles, parking stops). Supplies will be furnished. Contact the office if your club is interested.
When You Get Your Hancock Co 4-H Fairbook....
Open it up and look on the inside cover. Bambi has put a list of all the projects that you have enrolled in. Find those projects listed in the fairbook, check that it was what you thought it was, and decide if there are any projects that you would like to add or delete. You have until April 30th to make changes! If you have any questions about the schedule, project requirements, or where something you have done would fit...give us a call. We are always willing to help! Plan Ahead!

This year's date will be Saturday, March 7th from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. at the Carthage Sale Barn.
· All steers that will be exhibited at the State Fair, and/or taken to Congerville must have Electronic ID Tags. Electronic ID Tags will be available after January 15th, 2009. · Steers entering in the County 4-H Rate of Gate will need to be at the weigh-in.
· All steers must be dehorned.

· Youth 8-18 years of age must re-certify annually by attending a Youth PQA education class.
· Youth getting re-certified this year will not receive a card or number in the mail. They will use the same number forever so they are expected to keep it.

Quality Assurance & Ethics Certification
The Quality Assurance & Ethics Certification (QAEC) must be taken by every 4-H member that is exhibiting any of the following at the Illinois State Fair: beef, sheep, swine, horse, dairy, meat goats, and poultry. This certification is done online. 4-H members are only required to take it only once. The QAEC website is now available and can be found at http://web.extension.uiuc.edu/qaec. This is not a requirement to exhibit at the Hancock County 4-H Fair, but it is strongly recommended by Extension Staff and Livestock Superintendents. If you need to access a computer at our office to complete this, call us to make an appointment to make sure one will be available to you.
Illinois State Fair Lamb Tattoo & Weigh-in Locations
If you are interested in showing your sheep at the State Fair, you need to have them weighed and tattooed at WIU Livestock Pavilion on May 15th from 3:00-6:00 p.m. Exhibitors will need to pay for the electronic ID tags on sight. You should bring along a check made out to the University of Illinois or have correct change; the cost of the tags is $2.00 per lamb. For more info call Dean Oswald at 309-836-8705.

Jr. members (under 14 by 01/01/09) and Sr. members (Over 14 by 01/01/09). We will pick our Jr and Sr teams from the scores at this competition. Registration will begin at 8:15 am and the contest at 9:00 am. Pre-registration is required by calling our office by March 20th. The fee will be $7.00 per participant, which includes lunch, and must be paid in advance at our office. Parents are encouraged to attend and help with scoring, or just watch. Once we know who is going, we will arrange car-pooling so that all can attend. This is a great learning experience that will help you pick superior livestock in your future farming endeavors.
Illinois Southdown Breeders Sponsor Lamb Contest
The Illinois Southdown Sheep Breeders Association is sponsoring its 16th annual essay contest and will be awarding a Southdown ewe lamb to the winner. The contest is open to Illinois 4-H or FFA members under the age of 16 and not currently raising Southdown sheep. The lamb, registered in the winners' name, will come from one of the quality Southdown flocks maintained in Illinois and have a $150-$250 value. The lamb will be presented to the essay winner at the Annual Illinois Southdown Experience held in Eureka, Illinois in June.
Southdowns are a popular 4-H and FFA project because of their pleasant disposition and ability to be kept on small acreage. In recent years their increased size and leanness has made them attractive to the commercial breeder. They continue to be an ideal sheep for a youth project, small farm flock or hobby. In past contests lambs have been donated by Kurt Shattuck, Keith Carson, Kenneth Clayton, Mark & Amy Johnson, Mike & Shirley McElvain, Gale Cole, Jami Meisenheimer-Bowman, Dave Fruendt, Mike Miller, the Jim Davis family and Brad & Rhonda Baer.
Odds On Racing and Balmoral Park are pleased to co-host the second
The Harness Racing Youth League is a 5-day/4-night event in which participants are given the opportunity to learn about harness racing and caring for horses. The format includes daily barn activities including grooming, harnessing, hitching and driving the horses. Mixed in are games and hands-on experiences which allow for further understanding of the horse industry.
The camp applicants should be between the ages of 11 and 13 years.
No prior horse experience is required. To apply, an application and essay must be submitted.
A fee of $150 is charged; this fee covers all lodging and meals for the camp. Once accepted, the participant will be given additional and medical information to complete.
Check in will take place Friday morning, June 19 at 8:30AM at Odds On Racing. The camp will conclude after the exhibition of the HRYL participants during the races at Balmoral Park on June 23.
