University of Illinois Extension provides educational programs and research-based information enabling local citizens to make practical decisions that improve the quality of their lives.

The nationwide network of Extension programs began in 1914 as a means of presenting land-grant university research in understandable and useful ways to farmers and rural families. Today, Extension serves both urban and rural areas by offering programs in four broad areas: 4-H Youth Development; Agriculture & Natural Resources; Community & Economic Development; and Nutrition, Family & Consumer Sciences. Local citizens on an advisory council provide direction for our programming within these four areas.

The future of Extension in Greene County will depend on funding. Expenses continue to increase while state funding is decreasing. We have begun to charge fees for many of our programs and established some cost savings measures.
