A Message from the Associate Dean
Congratulations to Dr. Easter upon being named Interim Chancellor and Provost of the Urbana-Champaign campus by the Board of Trustees this past week. Dr. Easter is former Dean of ACES, Head of the Department of Animal Sciences, and has been a faculty member in Animal Sciences since 1976. We look forward to working with him and wish him the best in this new position.
The only certainty about budgets is uncertainty. We are currently planning for a rescission of 4.5% and a longer term reduction of up to 15%. The uncertainty on the latter is the length of time over which that cut will occur. Currently we are planning for it to occur over a five year period, but if state revenues are not improved, the cut may occur much sooner. President White has indicated that there will be no furloughs this calendar year. Note that I have said calendar year. There is no assurance that there will not be furloughs in the next calendar year.
To meet these budgetary constraints, changes will need to be made in the system. I have no preconceived idea of what those changes will be, but assure you that the changes will be based first on a programmatic basis. We will find the funds necessary to do the high priority programs. I welcome any input you care to make, but do ask that you make it in writing, preferably by email.
Last Friday evening, I had the pleasure of attending the ACES College Connection event recognizing 4-H Alumni and Friends and ACES Alumni award winners; then on Saturday, the Salute to Agriculture day prior to the Illinois-Northwestern football game. While the football game did not end up as we wanted, it was good to visit with many of our stakeholders from around the state.
The award recipients included:
4-H Award Winners
2009 4-H Alumni Award – This national award was founded in 1953 and recognizes 4-H alumni throughout the country for their outstanding career accomplishments and leadership in civic, community, and professional activities.
- Curt Jones (5 year Pulaski County 4-Her) -- Founder and CEO, Dippin' Dots

2009 Friend of 4-H Award – This national award was also founded in 1953 and recognizes individuals for their outstanding and sustained support and volunteer service to 4-H.

Larry Fischer Leadership and Spirit Award – Honors county 4-H or Extension foundation board members or fundraising volunteers.
- Randy Seggebruch, Grundy County (10 year Grundy County 4-Her; Saratoga Ag) -- Current Chair of Grundy County Extension Council
ACES Alumni Association Outstanding Young Alumni Award - Terry Moros – After earning a B.S. (1998) and M.S. (2000) degrees in food science, Terry began his career at Frito-Lay in Plano, Texas, developing new products, launching flavor extensions, and leading numerous projects. Additionally, he now supervises 14 associates in the research and development and operations analytical labs. He remains engaged in working with students during student recruitment and recently hosted a 4-H summer academy with the Illinois 4-H program in conjunction with the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition. The recipients credited 4H for providing them with the ability to set goals and formulate a plan to attain those goals; to learn how to be a team player; and to develop their leadership skills. The connection between family and 4H was clearly enunciated by several.
Have a great week!
Sincerely,
Robert Hoeft, Interim Associate Dean
