Spring 2008
General

Spring has finally arrived...

...and I'm ready for some outside work and activities. I'm sure you are too. At Fulton County Extension, we know spring has arrived because the phone starts ringing, emails flow in, and Fulton citizens walk through our doors with requests for information and answers to their questions ranging from "How do I get rid of bats in my house?" to "What's the best way to stabilize my stream bank?"... Helping people one-on-one is probably the aspect of extension work that I enjoy the most!

We had a great set of winter programs and events in all of our program areas this year. I especially enjoyed teaching part of the Pesticide Safety Education program along with our Macomb Center Crop Specialist Loretta Ortiz-Ribbing, honoring our volunteers and partners at our annual volunteer banquet in Fairview, and being involved for the first time in our Annual Fee Hunt Workshop at Dickson Mounds in partnership with Prairie Hills RC&D (55+ participants). Recently we had a great turn out for our Estate Planning Seminar (more than 40 in attendance), and will likely do a similar program next year. (Thanks goes to U of I Extension Educator Jim Endress and local attorney Jim Elson for their terrific and informative presentations!) Our calendar becomes shorter in the spring as we spend more time working our budgets for the next program year and preparing for our full summer schedule of activities. Even so, there are many opportunities available for you to learn, grow, or serve by utilizing U of I Extension.

Read through this newsletter and get a taste for what we are doing. Also, take advantage of the articles, tips, and opportunities for learning that we offer. Our goal is to provide you with research-based information ranging from the practical to the cutting edge, and to meet any educational needs or requests you have that fall within the scope of our four program areas – Agriculture and Natural Resources, 4-H Youth Development, Community and Economic Development, and Nutrition, Family and Consumer Sciences. If you have questions, check out our website (http://fulton.extension.uiuc.edu), call us, email us, or just walk in, and we will do our best to provide you with the information you require.

Enjoy the spring and the new life it brings,

Earl Allen

County Extension Director
