Flower arranging is a skill that can be used throughout life. Extension is offering an opportunity for youth to learn to make a fall flower arrangement in a basket on Tuesday, September 16th at 5:00 p.m. Charlotte Jackanicz, a former 4-H member who took flower arranging as a project and is now employed at Stevens Floral, will be the instructor. The cost is $10 for supplies, and participants will take home a finished arrangement. Registration and payment of the fee is needed by September 8th at the Extension office. The program will be held in the Extension Building on Route 14 just west of Benton. If there is enough interest, this will be repeated for each approaching holiday. Call 439-3178 to register.
Seminar Set for Grandparents Caring for Grandchildren
More than 4.5 million grandparents are raising their grandchildren in the United States. When children are raised by their grandparents or other relatives, it's often due to the unavailability of the child's parents -- frequently caused by death, illness, substance abuse, teenage pregnancy, unemployment, divorce, incarceration or child abuse. Many of these grandchildren are dealing with issues of anxiety, abandonment and self-esteem. Grandparents can feel overwhelmed at times.
In an effort to help grandparents and other adults who are parenting again, University of Illinois Extension and The Gero-Psych Program of Franklin-Williamson Human Services, Inc. have teamed up to offer the seminar, Grandparents Caring for Grandchildren: Through the Mind of a Child.
The seminar is set for Thursday, September 25, 9 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. at John A. Logan College, Carterville. Lunch is included.
Topics include Anxiety, Abandonment, Self-Esteem: What's going on in the child's mind? by Ajay Mayor, M.D., Adolescent and Child Psychiatrist, Illinois Centre Behavioral Health, Shawnee Health Care; Addressing Behavioral Problems of the Child by Judy Durham, LCSW, Child Therapist; and Understanding Adolescence: What's Normal, What's Not, When to Worry, and What to Do by Julie O'Conner, MS, QMHP, Juvenile Justice Programs Coordinator, FWHS.
The seminar is provided free of charge, but advance registration is needed by September 19. To register, call U of I Extension, 618-993-3304 or e-mail williamson_co@extension.uiuc.edu. This seminar is partially funded by the Older Americans Act through the Egyptian Area Agency on Aging.
