The fifth annual Equine Seminar sponsored by University of Illinois Extension and local supporters is set for Monday, March 3rd at 6:30 p.m. in the Extension Building west of Benton.
Proposed equestrian fees for the Shawnee National Forest have been creating considerable discussion in the area, and Tim Pohlman, Recreation Program Manager for the Shawnee National Forest, will share information on that issue. Feed Selection, Coping with Hay Shortages, and New Research on Gastric Ulcers will be discussed by Kevin Kline, University of Illinois Professor of Animal Sciences. Horse owners have been asking questions such as, how long do pellet type feeds need to be to aid digestion if they are replacing hay? These and others will be answered. The University has also just completed new research on gastric ulcers.
A panel of experts will touch on equine hot topics such as joint supplements, care of the older horse, emergency first aid, current research, etc. There will also be time set aside to ask questions of the panel. Members will include Marc Miles, DVM of Herrin, Roger Clark, DVM of Benton, John Spence, DVM of Sesser, Ron Beasley DVM of Eldorado, and Kevin Kline, University of Illinois Professor of Animal Sciences.
There is no cost for attending this program, but pre-registration is needed so that materials can be available. Refreshments will be served and door prizes given. Please call Franklin County Extension at 618-439-3178 by Tuesday, February 26th to get your name on the list.
