If you think popular websites like MySpace and Facebook are harmless, think again. Viruses, spyware and malware can be spread through the pictures, music and files that are posted on these sites.

MySpace is a social networking site aimed at high school students, and Facebook is a similar networking site aimed at college students. Both websites are designed for users (kids) to "network with their friends" and share music, pictures and information about themselves.

Richard Fitts, computer expert with Razor Consulting, says the first problem arises when users reveal personal information through text, pictures, personal emails or phone numbers. The second problem is that malicious programs and cookies can be embedded in images, songs, videos and links. Think of it like this: Jane asks Bob to be her friend... she adds him to her "friends list" on her account. Now, every contact that Bob has on his "friends list" is linked to Jane's account. All Jane has to do is look at the wrong profile with a video, song, file or image and she could be infected with malware or spyware.

"This is just one example of how viruses, spyware and malware can end up on your computer," says Fitts. "Many people think that if they are only viewing a site, they don't have a risk of downloading a virus or other problem. But when you 'view' a site, you are, in effect, downloading that content to your computer, and that poses a potential risk. There are even some risks associated with certain web browsers such as Internet Explorer."

So does that mean you should stay off the internet? Absolutely not, says Fitts. You just need some basic knowledge about how the internet works in order to protect yourself and your computer."

You can learn more at the upcoming Internet Security Seminar sponsored by University of Illinois Extension on Thursday, February 21. The program will be held at the Franklin County Extension Office, 1212 Route 14 West, Benton, from 6 to 9 p.m.

The first two hours of the seminar will provide practical advice for staying safe on the Internet–whether surfing for information, paying bills online, or checking out popular sites like MySpace. During the last hour of the program, participants will have a chance to use laptop computers to access the Internet and practice the tips offered. During this time, Fitts will also be available to discuss individual computer problems, questions or concerns.

Cost for the seminar is $10. Advance registration is needed. For more details, phone U of I Extension, 618-439-3178, or log on to www.extension.uiuc.edu/franklin.

If you need disability accommodations to participate in this program, please indicate when registering
