Preparing for modern leadership in today's world was the focus of the Southern Illinois Leadership Convention held earlier this month in Carbondale. The convention drew 31 delegates and 15 planning committee members from 19 Illinois counties, including Hannah Sickmeyer, Thompsonville, and Mike Heathcoat, Benton.

The high school teens participated in workshops on cultural awareness and understanding, working effectively in groups and teams, stepping out of your comfort zone, dealing with peer pressure and standing up for your own beliefs, communicating and speaking in public, and developing a positive and happy spirit. The convention also included dances, a trivia night, a fun auction, two community service projects and great speakers!

This was the third year for the event, and it was a huge success. Dates for the 2010 convention have already been set for October 9 – 11. For more information or to find out about other youth leadership opportunities, contact U of I Extension, 439-3178, or e-mail: bauman1@illinois.edu.
