What is FSNEP?
The University of Illinois Extension Food Stamp Nutrition Education Program (FSNEP), formerly known as the Family Nutrition Program, is a federally funded grant that provides education to low-income families on nutrition, food safety, and money management. These individuals are not singled out in any way, thus allowing the general public to benefit from presentations and newsletters as well. Participants look forward to the visits and many relate ways they are using past lesson topics to improve their eating habits for a healthier lifestyle.
Monthly presentations feature hands-on activities and cooking demonstrations for a wide range of ages from pre-school children through senior citizens. Approximately 40 elementary classrooms are visited each month, reaching over 750 - 1,000 students in qualifying school districts in the unit. Many of these school districts report high percentages of free and reduced lunches, so this is an excellent way to reach needy families.
Other locations where the FSNEP presentations are scheduled include: Family Community Resource Services, WIC sites, Head Start Program sites, Food Pantries, Libraries, Group Homes, Senior Citizen Centers, and Summer Youth Programs.
A variety of FSNEP newsletters and fact sheets are sent or distributed to an additional 2,500 or more individuals through schools, local agencies, Share Food sites, and local Food Pantries. Pregnant moms receive "Letters From Your Unborn Child", a monthly newsletter written from the baby's perspective. It describes some of the changes that are happening as the baby grows and develops and encourages healthy eating habits. Senior citizens appreciate the newsletters that feature recipes for one or two people. Hispanic newsletters are also available upon request.
