Master Gardener Meeting
Effingham County
Tuesday, October 28th, 2008
A second meeting was held this month to take the place of the Veteran's Say Holiday meeting in the hopes that some of the other members could make it. Didn't happen. Normalie Strickland called the meeting to order at 6:50 after waiting for others to show. In addition to Normalie, Lyetta Awalt, Betty Boos, Brenda Roedl, and Rita Kemme attended.
Minutes: Minutes of the October 14th meeting were read and approved with a motion by Lyetta and a second by Betty. Motion carried.
Financial: In the cross fund there was a balance of $858.00. Mulch was $162.50, leaving a balance of $795.50. In the Master Gardener fund, $2255.00 was on hand. An expense of $41.55 leaves a balance of $2213.45. Motion by Rita and second by Betty and motion carried to approve the financial.
Old Business: Friday's restaurant will take reservations for Dec... With this in mind the group chose that site for our Christmas Dinner which will be held on December 10th, a Wed. at 6P.M. Rita will call for reservations and ask for a table in the back. Dorothy and Larry will need to be called since they do not have email.
Alwerdt's was called and Nick said that he has had good luck with the Bayer Advanced Insect Control for Bagworms. Read label and apply in the spring.
Brenda's Notes: Office: move is 99% complete and members looked at the room before the meeting. Come get acquainted.
Cross: Lyetta, Brenda, Betty, Normalie, Rita and Moe worked at the Cross on October 27th and completed the fertilizing of the trees, mulching of the trees, weeding on the East bed, almost. Much of the sage that had become invasive was dug out. Moe and Brenda have been back since and finished the east bed weeding and then mulched and trimmed all the privets on the north and on the south. Mulching was completed on the flag pole and the dead cedar was removed and the one from the far south was planted in its place and then mulched. The hydrangea on the north was also mulched as well as the other trees and shrubs on the north. Suckers still need to be trimmed on the trees and one of the gingko's is in need of staking, but otherwise it is ready for winter. Lyn helped on one of the days with weeding. Brenda and Betty attended the Foundation meeting and Brenda was told she could get estimates for the threes that are to circle the back of the cross. A downspout is still needed on the east bed due to the large amount of rainfall coming off the roof.
Halloween at Evergreen: Betty, Lyn, Normalie and Rita have volunteered to help with this day.
Master Gardener Conference: This will be held in Effingham in Sept. of 2009. Effingham will be in charge of setting up the tours for the first day. Speakers and booths will take up the second day. Half days at Vandalia and the Mennonite Settlement and Alwerdt's and Cumberland Greenhouses.
