Master Gardener Meeting

Effingham County

Tuesday, August 8th, 2006

The meeting was called to order at 6:40 P.M. In attendance were Purnima Shah, Normalie Strickland, Betty Boos, Brenda Roedl, and Rita Kemme.

Minutes

The minutes of the July meeting were read. Motion to approve minutes as read was made by Betty and seconded by Purnima. Motion carried.

Financial Report

Financial report was not available. Brenda reported and expense of $52.00 for the mulch applied at the fairgrounds.

Old Business

Rita asked for help in writing the articles for the newspaper or at least ideas for the articles. Hostas were mentioned and maybe Dennis will help with this. Paw Paws were also mentioned. Normalie will try to write one on fall lawn care which will soon be here and also on edible flowers. Telenet on this next week may give some insight on the flowers.

Brenda's Notes

Cross: Brenda has been out to pull weeds, and Betty has also. Glenda Matheney called in to say she and her husband did some pulling also. If we visit out there and see some weeds, pull them. This counts toward hours. Since we have not been able to plant any more trees, it was suggested that we put out some large pots and fill them with flowers to give some color to the North side and the east entrance. Betty moved and Normalie seconded that we purchase some pots now that they will be on sale. Motion carried. Betty will check with Menards and if anyone sees some good buys on the large pots, give Brenda a call. We are still waiting on what to do about the problem of the Cross site being so much higher ground that the Visitors Center and this causes standing water and this is what killed the trees. 6 were lost as well as 7 of the evergreens. IDOT is not taking responsibility, but will do some trenching when the road work is finished. Brenda mentioned the possibility of putting in a dry waterway with rock at the edge of the planting area behind the chapel.

Jr. Master Gardeners: July 29th saw mulch applied at the fairgrounds and the roses trimmed. Coxcomb and zinnias are blooming and look good. Weeds were pulled and the grounds looked pretty good for the fair going on this week. The tomatoes at Lakeland are looking good and the sun flowers are doing well. Some are tall enough to be seen over the fence.

New Business

A client had called in a tomato problem and this was discussed, as well as an ID on a nut found at Evergreen Park.

The next meeting will be Tuesday, September 12th, 2006. Meeting adjourned at 8:03.

Submitted by: Rita Kemme, secretary.
