Master Gardener Meeting

Effingham County

Tuesday, May 8th, 2007

Normalie Strickland, Vice President called the meeting at 6:52 in the absence of Purnima Shaw, Pres. In attendance were Lyetta Awalt, Dorothy Niebrugge, Larry Johnson, Leslie Niebrugge, Betty Boos, Normalie Strickland, Brenda Roedl and Rita Kemme.

Minutes

The minutes of the April meeting were read. Spelling of Lyetta's name to be corrected, then Dorothy moved the minutes be approved as read and Larry seconded.

Financial Report

Brenda presented a bill for the demonstration items of Feb. meeting of $42.00. Rest remains the same.

Old Business

Normalie sent in an article on Hummingbirds and Brenda did one on Frost Damage. Any ideas or articles are appreciated. We missed getting one in on the 24th of April as Rita was in Nashville Hospital with husband, but we should see one every week now again.

Brenda's Notes

Cross: We still have about $400.00 to spend. Grasses along the north side have been suggested and to finish the south to look like the other side of the door. Also mentioned were rock, large to be placed in the swale area and then plant ground cover plants to cover the rock eventually. The drainage pipes still have to be moved before we can begin. A butterfly garden has also been suggested and the Effingham Garden Club has purchased a dogwood to be placed at our discretion.

Office Help: Calls are getting more frequent. Easy way to get in hours. Come help

Jr. Master Gardeners: Lakeland will furnish manpower and money if we give them landscaping ideas for areas around the 200 wing and the 300 wing. Suggested to plant bulbs and hostas around the redbud tree and to look into the other areas because some have air conditioners at the sites, and maybe stepping stones could be used in these areas. They also are still interested in the tomatoes. A specimen tree in the center is a possibility and a cornelian cherry dogwood was suggested. Pots are needed to plant strawberry plants donated from Wal-Mart. Normalie moved and Dorothy seconded that we allow Brenda the purchase power and monies to buy planters for this.

June Projects: June 2nd is the Women in the Outdoors at Ballard. Brenda, Dorothy with perennials and Betty can help. Brenda and Rita will do Roses at Sacred Heart on June 5th.

Other: Catholic charities: Has asked for planting help, plants and labor and ideas for their building, but it was decided that we do not have the manpower to take on any other projects than the Cross.

New Business

Radio Spot: Brenda announced that she has been having a radio spot on WCRA at 8:05 on the first Monday of the month. Started in Feb. and it is a question and answer spot for 20-25 minutes.

Plant Sale: It was moved by Rita and seconded by Dorothy that we have the plant sale on the 19th of May since we had to cancel on the 28th of April due to the frost damaged plants. Most are looking good again. We will arrive at 6:30 and start selling at 7 A.M. Brenda will be available for setup on the 18th, and she will place an ad in the newspaper for Thurs and Friday prior.

Adjourn

Meeting was adjourned at 9:00 with a motion by Lyetta and a second by Betty. Next meeting will be June 12th, 2007 at 6:30 P.M.

Submitted by: Rita Kemme, secretary.
