It's Party Time! (4-H Awards/Weiner Roast)

Although the 4-H Fair is just a memory of fun, friends and learning, the 4-H year isn't officially complete until the Awards Program is over. If you haven't already done so, submit an award application. For more information, go to our website and print a form, ask your club leader for advice and forms, or contact our office.

Bring family and any friends that might want to join 4-H to the weiner roast and hayride. A good time is guaranteed!

4-H Federation News

The 4-H Federation Meeting was held Wednesday, September 16, 2009 at the 4-H fairgrounds in the Multi-Purpose building. Six clubs were represented including Stratton Jr. Farmers, Ft. Sumpter, New Providence Pioneers, Bell Ridge, Shooting Stars and Scotts Victory. Those present were: Brett Wilson, Amanda Ingram, Tyler Bouslog, Mackenzie Martin, Hana Smith, Katie Smith, Kenny Phillips, Rachel Kenderdine, Sarah Kenderdine, Josh Kenderdine, Shannon Ueberfluss, Tricia Martin, Cathy Smith, Shaun Sullivan – leader, Adam Cash – leader, Brad Cash – leader, Sue Kenderdine – Edgar County 4-H Community Worker.

The Federation currently has a balance of $24,894.10.

¨ How to keep our recycling educational was discussed. It was suggested we create a tri-fold brochure to hand out on recycling days and to be made available to the community at different businesses throughout the county. We discussed the impact of recycling on our community and how it has gone from a small project to an explosion of activity because we are lucky enough to have an extremely large amount of community backing. Reports show that Edgar County 4-H has recycled 63.51 tons (127,020 pounds) of paper products and cardboard since December of 2008. That means we have saved around 1,088 trees simply by recycling. That's a forest in and of itself. Last year when the recycling program started we voted to use the money to help pay for the new showring so Sarah Kenderdine made a motion to donate $1,000 to the 4-H Association showring building fund, and Shannon Ueberfluss seconded it.

¨ The food and livestock auction rules have been changed for next year. The food auction will allow each 4-H member to sell two lots only, and the Association will charge each

¨ 4-H member selling livestock a 10% commission.

¨ The Master Gardeners are revamping the flowerbeds.

¨ Our 4-H Awards Rally is coming up on Friday, October 30th. Members were assigned tasks. Our Game Committee needs help thinking of games to play. Everyone said they would try to think of new ideas before our next meeting.

¨ Other business includes Edgar County 4-H is celebrating its 90th birthday in 2010 and Federation members are going to think of ways we can celebrate. A 90th Anniversary

¨ t-shirt designing contest was discussed. It was agreed that we all think the design contest is a great idea. We will discuss the celebration further at a later meeting.

The Federation will meet again on Wednesday, October 21st at 7 p.m., at the 4-H fairgrounds Multi-Purpose building.

4-H Association Update:

Have you driven into the 4-H Fairgrounds lately? Illini FS has begun erecting the new show ring/rabbit barn. We can't begin to adequately thank those who assisted in taking down the showring and dealing with the building supplies. If you see these individuals, please convey your appreciation for the time and equipment they donated or provided at reduced fees:

A.J. Adams & Sons, Ingrum Waste, Ova Lindsey, John Wood Trucking, Lawrence Gravel

Here are some interesting details:

¨ 244 Tons of gravel was used to level the base (there's a big slope to the east)

¨ $1800 from sale of aluminum roofing and electrical wire to a recycler

¨ The poles were given to the volunteer who arranged the sale of the roofing and wiring. His assistance enabled us to receive more from the sale.

¨ Part of the west siding was donated to the Humane Association for use in building shelters; the rest was saved and may be reused in the new building

¨ 72 tons of unsalvageable lumber were hauled to the Centenary IN landfill

¨ The concrete pad was broken into pieces and will be used by a farmer

The Master Gardeners have torn out the plantings in the main bed and have begun replanting it. It will be beautiful all 4 seasons!

This N' That

Dear Edgar Co. 4-H Members:

It's time for the Annual Edgar County Fall Classic for Aerospace. It will be held at Hoof & Paw Dog Boarding, 5251 N. Terre Haute, Rd, Paris. The event will be on Sunday, October 11, starting with registration at 1:30 pm.

As Brad Cash has another event to be at from 1:30 to 5:00 p.m. that day, Adam Cash will be in charge of the event. So—bring your rockets, engines, lawn chairs, and food for the cookout later...They will see you there!

Brad Cash, Aerospace Project Leader

Congratulations, Gertrude (Trudy) Wilson! Trudy was inducted into the Illinois 4-H Hall of Fame and was honored at a ceremony during the state fair. Trudy was honored for her 40+ years as a 4-H volunteer, serving in many capacities. We will honor Trudy with an article (hopefully on the front page) with the 2010 4-H Fair coverage.

Help us reduce costs: Have any project books you either didn't use or didn't write in and don't need again? Please return them to your club leader or the Extension Office.

If you have made a difference by volunteering in the community over the past year, apply for the $1,000 Prudential award. For details, go to: http://spirit.prudential.com/view/page

Are your teens into LCP – Leadership, Citizenship, and Professionalism? The Illinois Farm Bureau and their Affiliate Companies offer a wonderful recognition opportunity for 4-H members ages 17 and above. The 4-H LCP Award provides several levels of recognition to applicants – two recipients per county; ten 4-H members with the highest cumulative point totals for state recognition at the Illini Summer Academies; and ten 4-H members who may attend the IFB Premier 20 Leadership Conference in April.

Applications are available through your local Extension office or via the web:

http://web.extension.uiuc.edu/state4h/members/recognition_awards.cfm . Each Extension unit determines how they select their two nominees for the state competition. Applicants must be 4-H members who are at least 17 years of age by December 1, 2009. Check with your local Extension office for the county deadline; the state deadline is postmarked by December 15, 2009

Correction: The Illinois Livestock Record Book was too bulky to include in the September issue. Contact your club leader or the Extension Office for the form—you'll need one for each species you intend on keeping records on.

4-H Federation has determined that this will be an additional award opportunity for 2010.
