Urban Environment & Natural Resources

There is an increasing divide between the urban populace and the natural world. The Urban Environment and Natural Resources Team addresses the necessity of contact with nature for healthy adult and youth development.

This team focuses on helping the people of Cook County understand, enjoy and preserve their natural environment. Programming targets government officials, businesses, homeowners and neighborhood associations, teachers, families and youth. Partnering with existing environmental groups and organizations is a large part of this initiative.

The people of Cook County can seek guidance from Extension to plan for safe, healthy environments. This team assists neighborhoods and communities in preserving open spaces and watersheds and protecting wildlife habitat, as well as learning ways to beautify and maximize the natural environment.

Teachers will learn how to use surrounding natural environments as classrooms so students can focus on their home region's own rich array of indigenous species and ecosystems.

Government officials, including mayors, councils, and township officials, will have the opportunity to consult with University environmental experts on environmental issues, planning and research.

A growing body of evidence recommends that contact with nature is as important to youth as good nutrition and adequate sleep. Thus, this initiative will create ways youth can access and reconnect with nature to better understand it. Nature clubs and camps will provide youth with their own direct experiences and experimentation.

Programming will assist environmental groups and organizations in identifying community needs and responding to them. University staff will provide technical assistance, subject-matter training and leadership.
