Shelley Hoyt Anderson

Extension Unit Educator, Economic Development

Shelley Hoyt Anderson has an extensive background in banking, including commercial real estate finance, loan portfolio analysis, community development lending and retail branch management. Her previous experiences have been with the Chicago not-for-profit, Shorebank Neighborhood Institute (SNI) and JP Morgan Chase (legacy First Chicago Bank). Prior to Chicago, Shelley worked in Charlotte, NC with Bank of America (legacy NCNB - North Carolina National Bank).

Shelley offers Tools for a Step-Up in the Local Economy, a seminar series on best-practices, resources and "how to" fundamentals for adults who own, manage or want to start and sustain small businesses or not-for-profit social enterprises. She can also provide these topics and others to special groups, to youth and to Spanish-speaking audiences, upon request.

Ms. Hoyt Anderson earned her M.B.A. from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania and an A.B. cum laude from Harvard University. In addition to her professional experience, she has over a decade of affiliations with numerous non-profit, civic and faith-based organizations throughout the Chicago area. Shelley enjoys speaking Spanish and French and values sharing her time and expertise through outreach.

Focusing on urban communities in need of economic resources and skills, Shelley's outreach mandate with U of I Extension is to collaborate with community-based organizations and faith-based groups, small businesses, entrepreneurs and individuals; to increase their financial and economic competitiveness and success in the local economy and for the communities in which they work and serve.

Program Offerings

Tools for a Step-up in the Local Economy offers economic development resources and training to empower Cook County residents, businesses and social enterprises to successfully shape and increase their financial competitiveness.

Training Focus: Adult audiences who own, manage or want to start and sustain small businesses or not-for-profit social enterprises. Classes are also available for youth and Spanish-speaking audiences, upon request.

Funding Sources & Financial Resources seminars can be offered grouped or individually. Seminar topics include:

  • Borrowing Basic and Finance for Start-up Enterprises
  • Foundation Funding and Grants Resources for Starting a Non-Profit
  • Resource Development and Fundraising Strategies for Community-Based Organizations in 2009
  • Government Grants, RFPs and Funding Sources for For-Profits & Non-Profits

Writing Your Business Plan is offered as a six-week series of 2-hours seminars. It provides participants with resources and a foundation to begin their business plans, based on fundamental business best-practices. The series order follows:

  • Introduction to the Business Plan, Its Uses & Benefits
  • Business Organization Types
  • Market & Competitive Analysis and Advertising
  • Your Financial Profile - Financial Statements & Their Uses
  • Your Finanical Future - The Pro Forma & Your Forecast Assumptions
  • Preparing an Action Plan to Start Your Business Plan
