Magane Koshimura
Extension Unit Educator, Global Citizenship
Magane Koshimura delivers educational programs helping residents to have a better understanding of different countries/cultures, the nature of globalization, and global business. She focuses on the impact of globalization on local lives in order to create a more peaceful and prosperous society regionally, nationally and internationally.
Koshimura has taught multicultural education for undergraduate students at Michigan State University for several years. She's also involved in the cross cultural professional development project for local K-12 educators in Michigan. She worked on the World Bank's and Inter-development bank's projects for the Caribbean nations as a consultant. She has been a liaison and consultant for Japanese Ministry of Education's research division. She also has conducted numerous education research projects in the U.S. and in foreign countries such as Japan, China, and Zambia. Prior to working in the education field, she worked for Goldman Sachs as a research assistant for capital market products in the East Asian and Southeast Asian markets.
Koshimura earned her Ph.D. in Educational Administration K-12 from Michigan State University with focus on economics, finance and multicultural education, and a master's degree in Pacific Rim International Affairs from University of California, San Diego. She is affiliated with the American Educational Research Association and Comparative and International Education Society. Koshimura is trilingual–English, Japanese, and Mandarin Chinese.
Program Offerings
Cultural Competency and Diversity – Different Countries, Cultures and Languages: To learn different countries, cultures and languages to become culturally more competent.
- An 8- to 20-session program for students from grade 4 to grade 8, is provided to learn different countries, cultures and foreign languages (primarily Japanese and Chinese).
Leadership in a Global Economy: To get a better understanding of how the world is interconnected and what responsibilities and rights you have as a global citizen.
- An 8-session program for students, residents and business people, explores aspects of globalization, Global City Chicago, Global State Illinois, and multicultural communications.
Trade, Pricing and Globalization: To have a better understanding of why people trade and how price is set world-wide.
- A three 90 minute session program for middle and high school students, includes hands on activities to have a better understanding of why people trade, how price is set and how globalization affects you.
Global Business: To provide small- to medium-size business owners and entrepreneurs with more global business opportunities for economic growth and sustainability.
- Shaping a Global Business Economy with five-part series: Part I - How Is Globalization Changing Small Business and Our Local Economy; Part II - Business Structures and Strategies to Enter the International Marketplace; Part III - Regional Trade Offices, Organizations and Agencies Helping Business to Go Global; Part IV - Communication Skills to Do Business with Multi-cultural Partners and Customers; Part V - Quarterly Guest Speakers and Panel Events.
K-14 Professional Development: To help local educators to internationalize their curriculum with up-to-date global educational materials and lesson plans.
Enhancing Exchange between Overseas and American Educators: To create a platform for foreigners and Cook residents to exchange their knowledge, skills and experiences on certain educational topics.
- Through this ongoing program, meetings and school visits are arranged, focus group is created, and/or professional development on certain topic is provided for overseas professionals.
