Kia-Rai M. Pittman has been with University of Illinois Extension since April 2003. As an early college outreach educator she works with youth of all ages to better prepare them for higher education. Some of her workshops include study skills, preparing for college and financing college. She also takes youth on college campus visits to give them a snapshot of "college life." Kia-Rai includes the families of her students in her programs.
Pittman began her work with Extension as a youth development educator. In that role, Pittman managed the 4-H volunteer program including risk-management, training and recognition; coordinated 4-H Adventure Camp in partnership with the Community Economic Development Association (CEDA) at summer feeding sites; facilitated numerous workshops on character-building; and coordinated the 4-H embryology program in south suburban schools.
Kia-Rai enjoys building leadership and life-skills in youth and motivating others to reach their maximum potential. She believes every child deserves a chance at success regardless of his or her circumstance.
Her organizational memberships and affiliations include the American Counseling Association, National College Access Network, Illinois College Access Network and volunteering as an e-mentor for Make A Difference Youth Foundation.
Pittman earned her master's degree in counseling psychology from Saint Xavier University and her bachelor's degree in psychology from University of Iowa. She is a licensed professional counselor, a Real Colors certified facilitator and a Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) qualified facilitator.
