Small animals and humans have co-existed since the beginning of time, and in many cases have developed a special bond. Both share common biological structures and health problems as well as emotions. Therefore it’s important to be concerned about the health and wellbeing of our pets as well as ourselves.
University of Illinois Extension provides programs targeted to stimulate the interest of students in the biological and biomedical sciences. Other programs address small animal health with the aim of educating youth and adults about the care and management of companion animals.
Extension also provides research-based, up-to-date information on animal-human communicable diseases. Education opportunities for youth and adults include:
biotechnology
basic mammalian anatomy and physiology
care and management of companion animals
career information for biomedical, animal science, and veterinary medicine
Extension supports programs such as pet clubs and 4-H, and provides leadership support for young people conducting small animal science projects. Also, Extension offers opportunities for teachers, counselors, students, and parents to gain awareness of animal welfare programs in Cook County.
