The Giving Garden
The Giving Garden is a program launched by the Daily Herald newspaper
University of Illinois Extension Master Gardener volunteers and staff participated in this summer's Giving Garden event by planting a garden at Friendship Park Conservatory in Des Plaines. They planted rows of vegetables and small fruit to donate the fresh produce to local food banks and soup kitchens. The primary goal is to provide food agencies with access to fresh produce.
Through their donation, many people were able to enjoy the fresh produce and small fruit. The Giving Garden success hinges on its people-helping-people approach. The concept is simple. There are over 70 million gardeners in the U.S. alone, many of which plant vegetables. By encouraging gardeners to plant a little extra, many can be feed.
