Responsibilities of Dog Owners

It is not easy to decide if dog ownership is right for you. Dogs require a considerable amount of your time, and require your financial commitment as well. There are several reasons people cite for wanting a dog including companionship, wanting a pet for their child, and for protection in rare cases. And in some cases, people want a dog for breeding puppies.

Before you decide to get a dog, consider the following dog owner responsibilities:

  1. You must be committed to provide your dog with health care, food, grooming, regular exercise, training and other necessary attentions for the overall wellbeing of the dog.
  2. Your personality and environment must be conducive to having a dog.
  3. You must have the time to manage and care for your dog with bathing, grooming, brushing, and taking the dog for walks.
  4. If you are a frequent traveler, you must find quality boarding facilities for your dog while you are away.
  5. You must be ready to make financial commitment and investment necessary to take care of the dog including food and other health care management. Veterinary services like check-ups, vaccinations and other prescribed medications cost money.
  6. You must be willing to spay or neuter your dog to prevent accidental breeding and to reduce pet overpopulation.
