2009 S.T.E.M. Summer Academy Internship Program

ARE YOU READY?

University of Illinois Extension Cook County is offering a unique paid teaching internship for college sophomores, juniors and seniors interested in science, math or engineering. This opportunity is being offered to give interns an opportunity for hands-on teaching experience and to assist Extension with efforts to expand its S.T.E.M. programs to a greater number of elementary and middle school students in the Chicago area.

INTERNSHIP DUTIES

University of Illinois Extension interns will:

  • Present lessons on science, engineering or math-related topics to students in Chicago and the suburbs. Topics include but are not limited to: Life in Space, CSI Forensics, Global Warming, Probability and Statistics, Food Science, Animal and Plant Structure/Function and Horticulture;
  • Work with Extension S.T.E.M. educators to become trained on program curricula;
  • Assist S.T.E.M. educators with other duties as assigned;
  • Participate in a variety of teambuilding activities and educational workshops;
  • Attend weekly meetings with Internship Program Director.

IS THIS YOU?

We are looking for interns who:

  • Are currently sophomores, juniors or seniors in college;
  • Major in education, science, math or engineering;
  • Have a positive attitude and work ethic;
  • Demonstrate a desire to work with underserved children in an urban setting;
  • Have a reliable form of transportation with valid insurance.

SCHEDULE

The S.T.E.M. Summer Academy will last for 9 weeks, beginning on Monday, June 1 and ending on Friday, July 31. Interns will work between 30 and 37.5 hours/week. Salary is $10 /hour. Weekend work may be required. A background check will be required.
