Extension Is Community and Economic Development

What is community and economic development? There are many answers to this question. However, there is one fact that is clear – Extension is community and economic development (CED). Following are some facts about Chicago, CED and University of Illinois Extension's role:

Fact: Chicago's 77 neighborhoods have diverse needs and challenges. A healthy community is very important to the well being of its residents and the businesses and environmental structure that support it. Extension's programming encourages and supports a cohesive, tolerant and economically productive community by conducting community assessments and supporting agencies, organizations and businesses through active partnerships.

Fact: Individuals and families are faced with challenges on their jobs and living environment and they need support in taking care of loved ones. Extension provides access to lifelong learning opportunities that enhance and support healthy lifestyles through career development, neighborhood beautification projects and financial literacy education.

Fact: An integral part of a stable community is the financial stability of its residents. Making personal choices concerning credit and retirement planning, to supporting the development and management of local small business is crucial. Extension provides timely information in financial management and entrepreneurship skills to individuals, families and communities.

Fact: There is a growing senior citizen and ethnically diverse population in Chicago. It is important to provide safe environments and transitional opportunities for these populations. Extension provides culturally sensitive education in addressing community safety, volunteer opportunities and educational support for relatives and professionals who work with these populations.

Fact: Young people are the future leaders for Chicago. They need to be nurtured, trained and encouraged; Chicago faces a shaky future if they are not. Extension educates youth in leadership development and entrepreneurship skills and exposes them to the merits of civic participation in their communities.

The purpose of community and economic development is to develop efficient, productive and profitable environments in the context of the community's social, cultural and economic values. CED programming empowers individuals, families and their communities. CED also supports the city's structures (developers, agencies. organizations and government) by being committed to the process of change and improvement. Extension does a wide range of programming and provides many services, committing to the community and economic development for Chicago.
