Cooking Schools
The WIC Cooking Schools are a program offered to clients enrolled in the Chicago WIC program. WIC, Catholic Charities, and University of Illinois Extension partner to offer the program. The goals of the program are to provide basic nutrition education, cooking skills, and meal-planning skills to clients enrolled in WIC with an emphasis on utilizing foods offered in the WIC package. The Cooking Schools arefive days in length and are offered at various locations throughout the summer months.
Content covered in the cooking schools included My Pyramid, using serving sizes, Cooking skills and essentials, Food Safety, Menu Planning, Fruits, and Vegetables, Dairy Foods, Food Buying and Managing Resources, Beans and Meat, Fat and Cholesterol, Breakfast, Feeding Young Children, Snacks, Whole Grains, and Exercise and Wellness. Participants have the opportunity to practice the information that they learn through hands on activities pertaining to each lesson and through making meals and snacks each day. Each meal and snack incorporated foods from the WIC food package.
