Midwest Ecological Landscaping Association
Mike Novak, President of the Midwest Ecological Landscaping Association and a Chicago Master Gardener invites Master Gardeners to attend their fourth annual conference.
Happy 2006! And Happy MELA G-3! What? Don't know what MELA-G3 is? It's this...
...the ongoing comittment of the Midwest Ecological Landscaping Association to engage the Green Industry in dialogue about the most effective and environmentally sound landscaping practices. It is with the idea of Getting Green Greener that we are proud to present our fourth annual conference.
We hope you will join us at Triton College on February 22 to look at how"green" as a way of life and a business practice has evolved far beyond being simply an ethical choice. More and more,"green" makes practical and financial sense, and we've assembled a strong group of speakers to address how you can bring more "green" to your business and to your life.
LOG ONTO www.melaweb.org TO REGISTER ONLINE NOW for "Live Green and Prosper through responsible resource management." As always, our conference offers an opportunity to network and problem-solve with like-minded green industry professionals. Also, as always, we offer something that you don't see at most horticultural conferences: a gourmet lunch provided by the Triton College Hospitality Culinary Arts Department. If you're used to soggy sandwiches and limp salads, this is a singular dining experience.
We hope you'll also take this opportunity to renew your MELA membership or, if you've been thinking about it, but haven't gotten around to it yet, to join MELA. You will receive a $25 discount to the conference and become a MELA Charter Member. This makes you eligible for a number of benefits, which we will outline in a message that you will receive soon.
MELA is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization, so your dues are tax deductible to the extent provided by law. We welcome both professionals and the public to join usin a lively exchange of ideas and, at the same time,to help us make a difference on this tiny yet complex planet.

Growing Connection at Flower Show
The University of Illinois Extension and the United Nation's Growing Connection program have agreed to construct a Growing Connection/Earthbox Garden display at the Chicago Flower and Garden Show at Navy Pier. To prepare for this exhibit we need to plant 60 earthboxes immediately. Garfield Park Conservatory has generously given us space in their greenhouses for the earthboxes. The earthbox company is donating the boxes.
Nancy Kreith will be coordinating this project. She will need help from Master Gardeners on January 11, 12 and maybe the 13th putting the earthboxes together and planting them. The major task is moistening the soil for each of the boxes. She will also need Master Gardeners to water the earthboxes between now and March 9 when they will be transported to Navy Pier.
At the Flower Show we will need Master Gardeners to help set up the display and maintain it throughout the Show. Contact Nancy at 773-233-0476 or email her at kreith@uiuc.edu
