On Monday, July 10, the Summer Exploration Camp 2006, Science, Technology, and Much More started off with an Urban Green Thumb experience for twenty seventh and eighth graders. Ron Wolford, Urban Gardening/Environment Educator talked to the campers about Urban Gardening in Chicago. Campers saw a video about the Cook County Sheriff's Garden project. Campers visited and toured Aztlan Community Industries, 1112 East 87^th Street, a facility for mentally and physically challenged adults. Aztlan has a beautiful garden behind their building with 36 raised beds planted with flowers, veggies and herbs. Nancy Kreith, horticulture coordinator taught the campers how to put together and plant an earthbox. Campers divided into teams and planted five earthboxes. Campers will be back at Aztlan on July 14 for a community service project. They will be teaching some of the Aztlan adults how to plant five earthboxes that will be left in the garden. They will also be working with University of Illinois Extension Master Gardeners to plant new perennials, ornamental grasses and vegetables.
