Smart Home Garden Report: June 28
It was a busy day at the smart home on Saturday with continuous tours all day.
Nick Janakas (DuPage) and Ronald Wolford (Cook-Chicago) were the groomers for the day. Most of the planting is already done so Nick and Ron spent the morning weeding and watering. All garden scraps were added to the compost bin.
Dan Lynch (Cook) and Pat Pieper (DuPage) were the Docents for the morning tours. The compost and worm bin seemed to generate the most interest. I noticed an interested guest (teacher) discussing with Ron as to how he could incorporate the ideas and programs in their school
The garden including the earth boxes now has lettuce, herbs, squash, collard, pumpkin, tomato, pepper, rhubarb, eggplant, potato, okra, strawberry, sweet corn, eggplant, broccoli and parsley. Soon there should be plenty of vegetables. The lettuce will be removed and replaced with flowers and new vegetables.
So far no bugs or diseases except for the adult of the imported cabbageworm, a white butterfly with black spots.
The mix of flowers with herbs & vegetables gives the garden a splash of color and adds interest to it.

Smart Home Garden Report: June 21
What a beautiful garden! The color is starting to show. Nothing new was planted this week. Plans are to take out the lettuce as it is getting to the point of wilting from the heat.
Many plants are starting to bloom. 'Scarlet Runner' beans are starting to climb up the towers, tomatoes and squash are blossoming in the earthboxes on the museum steps.
Working today were: Roberta DeYoung (Will County) and Babara Cornell (DuPage County) as morning docents. Larry Fichter (Mc Henry County) was groomer for the day. His wife Jackie was docent in the afternoon. Both also worked alternating shifts in the museum at the Smart House resource desk. Karen Dorff (Cook) was also a docent in the afternoon.
Many people today were interested in composting. The second most popular topic was earthboxes and what you can grow in small spaces.
