Clay County HEA

Clay County Home Bureau

and Homemakers Extension Association – 1947 – 2007!

In late July, 1946, a group of 31 ladies met at the Christian Church in Louisville with Mrs. Mary Ligon and Gertrude Kaiser from the University of Illinois. They explained what would have to be accomplished in order for Clay County to organize Home Bureau. A Chairman was appointed to work with membership in each township. A temporary Chairman, Vice-Chairman and Secretary were elected to act until organization, when officers would be elected. A report meeting was held on August 13, 1946 and found 80-some members signed at that time. Then we had report meetings about every month. In the middle of December the goal of 350 was decided to be reached by February. Organization was set for February 24, 1947 at 1:30 p.m. at the Methodist Church in Louisville. On this date 377 members had been signed. The units were organized in March and April by the County Chairman, Vice-Chairman and Secretary, and on July 1, Miss Margaret Stoutenburg began working as Home Adviser.

Happy 60th Birthday, Clay County Home Bureau/H.E.A.!
